Hempstead, NY - Freshman Ana Hernandez Gil came off the bench to score a season-high 18 points, including four three-pointers in the decisive fourth quarter as Hofstra erased a 12-point deficit to post a 71-55 victory over visiting Massachusetts at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Wednesday night. The Pride outscored the Minutewomen, 30-7, in the final stanza including an 18-3 run over the final 5:40.

Hofstra improved to 5-3 on the season with the win, while Massachusetts dropped to 4-5 overall.

Hernandez Gil finished 6-10 from long range and led four Pride players in double figures with her 18 points. Aleana Leon finished with 14 points, while Ashunae Durant and Sandra Dongmo added 10 points apiece. Durant also had a team-high 11 rebounds. Krystal Luciano chipped in with seven points and added a game-high 10 assists.

The teams played an evenly-matched first quarter as neither team led by more than five. Hofstra held a 12-9 lead before the Minutewomen closed out the stanza with an 8-0 run over the final 2:39 to take a 17-12 advantage after the opening 10 minutes.

Massachusetts would take a 26-16 lead 6:19 into the second quarter following a Jessica George layup that capped off a 6-0 run. Durant ended the run with a free throw for the Pride to cut the deficit to nine. After trading three-pointers, Hernandez Gil hit her second of the quarter to pull the Pride within six, 29-23, with 1:40 to go. Massachusetts' Leah McDerment would hit one of two free throws with three seconds left to put the visitors up, 30-23. Hofstra grabbed the rebound on the missed second shot but immediately turned it over to give the Minutewomen one last possession before the half and George hit a three as time expired to send Massachusetts into the half with a 10-point edge, 33-23.

Hofstra opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run, five by Sandra Karsten, to cut the deficit to 35-32 with 6:32 to go.  But Massachusetts responded with an 8-0 run of its own to open up an 11-point lead, 43-32, with 3:39 to play in the third. The Minutewomen would match their largest lead of 12 points on two occasions before the Pride pulled within seven, 48-41, at the end of the quarter.

After Massachusetts scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter, Hernandez Gil (two) and Luciano hit consecutive threes to knot the score at 50 with 7:21 to go.
