MBB: Hofstra Wins CAA Opener Behind Greer’s Strong Game

Newark, DE – Junior Ty Greer tied his career-high with 17 points and added seven rebounds to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to a hard-fought 58-56 victory over Delaware in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at the Bob Carpenter Center on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Justin Wright-Foreman came up huge as well as he hit two free throws with 36 seconds left to account for the winning margin on his way to 15 points in the game.

Freshman Eli Pemberton was also in double figures for Hofstra with 11 points. Junior Rokas Gustys pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds in the game.

The win was Hofstra's third straight and seventh in its last nine games. The Pride improved to 9-5 and 1-0 in CAA play with the win. Delaware falls to 7-7 and 0-1 in league action.

Hofstra quickly turned around an early 8-4 deficit as they scored 10 straight points to lead 14-8 with 12:20 left before intermission. The Pride made the run from long range as they got three-pointers from Greer, Wright-Foreman and Pemberton during the spurt.

Another trifecta, courtesy of junior Jamall Robinson, would give Hofstra its largest lead of the half at 17-10 with just over 10 minutes left in the opening stanza.

The Pride would stay in front the remainder the of first half and would take a four-point lead, 30-26, into the break as junior Hunter Sabety beat the first half buzzer with a lay-up off a missed Hofstra free throw.

Delaware grabbed the momentum out of the break as the Blue Hens scored the first seven points of the second stanza to lead 33-30. Hofstra immediately responded, though, and scored 15 straight points to push the lead to double figures, 45-33, for the first time in the contest. Wright-Foreman keyed the run with eight of Hofstra's points during the game-changing spurt.

The Blue Hens gradually chipped away and would score five quick points to turn a double digit deficit into just a five-point lead for Hofstra, 46-41, with 10:56 left in the second half.

Hofstra's lead would dwindle down to two points, 51-49, after the Pride was held without a point for over six minutes. Senior Deron Powers would end the drought, though, and pushed the Hofstra lead back to four, 53-49, with 2:48 remaining in the second half.

The game would go down to the final minute as Ryan Daly drained a three-pointer for Delaware with a minute to play to even the score at 56.

Wright-Foreman would then get fouled shooting a three-pointer on the Pride's next possession and he would make the two free throws to make it 58-56 Hofstra with 36.5 seconds left.

Delaware missed a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, sending Hofstra home a winner.

Daly finished with game-highs of 20 points and 15 rebounds for Delaware, which also got 13 points from Anthony Mosley.

Powers added nine points and five assists for Hofstra.
