MBB: Pride Powers Past Siena

Hempstead, NY - Deron Powers scored a season-high 21 points and added eight assists, while Justin Wright-Foreman came off the bench to add 16 points as Hofstra posted an 84-64 win over Siena Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Hofstra had five players score in double-figures for the sixth time this season.

Eli Pemberton scored 13 points for the Pride, while Brian Bernardi chipped in with 11 points. Rokas Gustys posted his fifth double-double of the season and 28th of his career with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Ty Greer had six points and eight rebounds. 

Hofstra (8-5) enjoyed a strong shooting night from behind the arc, connecting on 11 of 21 three-pointers (52 percent). Powers was 4-5 from long distance. Pemberton and Bernardi each had two three-pointers in the game.

Leading 8-6, 5:06 into the contest, the Pride went on a 12-3 run to open up a 20-9 advantage with 11:16 remaining in the opening half. The Pride got five points from Wright-Foreman and three each from Pemberton and Powers in the run.  After a Siena basket made it a 20-11 game, Hofstra responded with a 7-0 run to go up by 16 (27-11) with 9:17 to play. The Saints responded with a 7-0 run of their own to pull within nine, 27-18, with 6:39 remaining. Hofstra would go up by as many as 14, 38-24, with 3:04 left before the Saints closed the half on a 5-0 run to trail 38-29 at intermission.

Hofstra would extend the lead to 12, 49-37, 4:12 into the second half on a three-pointer from Bernardi. Ninety seconds later, Powers drained a three-pointer to extend the Pride's lead to 15, 52-37. Hofstra would take its then-largest lead of the game on its next possession as Powers hit his fourth three-pointer of the contest to give the Pride a 55-37 advantage with 13:44 to play. The Pride would go up by 19, 62-41, following a Wright-Foreman jumper with 10:29 to play. Siena cut its deficit to 13, 70-57, with 4:47 to play but Pemberton answered with a corner three on the Pride's next trip to go back up by 16. The Saints would not get closer than 15 the rest of the way as Hofstra built the lead to 22 points with just over a minute to play.

Nico Clareth came off the bench to lead Siena (4-8) with 16 points. Javion Ogunyemi had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Hofstra will have another nine-day break between games as the Pride will return to action on December 31 in a New Year's Eve Colonial Athletic Association tilt at Delaware. Tip-off from the Bob Carpenter Center is set for 2 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra now leads the all-time series with Siena, 5-2, and the win snapped a two-game losing streak against the Saints.
-Joe Mihalich evened his career coaching record against Siena at 19-19.
-Powers' 21 points and four three-pointers are Hofstra bests for the transfer from Hampton. His eight assists match his Hofstra high.
-Hunter Sabety matched a season high with five blocks in 11 minutes of action.
