MBB: Six Score In Double-Figures As Hofstra Routs Stony Brook, 96-58

Hempstead, NY – Six Hofstra players, led by sophomore Justin Wright-Foreman's game-high 22 points, scored in double figures as the Pride ran by the Seawolves of Stony Brook, 96-58, in a non-conference game at the Mack Sports Complex Tuesday night. Hofstra, which snapped a modest two-game losing skid, improved to 7-5 on the season while Stony Brook, which dropped its second straight contest, falls to 3-7 on the year.

Since the renewal of the series three years ago, Hofstra has won two of the three meetings.

Wright-Foreman tallied 22 points on eight of 12 shooting, including two of four from the three-point line, and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. Freshman Eli Pemberton added 18 points while junior Ty Greer was one of two Pride players with a double-double posting 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Senior Deron Powers added 13 points and a game-high seven assists while classmate Brian Bernardi chipped in 11 points. Junior Rokas Gustys, the nation's leading rebounder, was the second Pride player to post a double-double with 11 points and 18 rebounds.

Gustys recorded his fourth double-double of the season and the 41st of his career. It was Greer's first double-double of his career as the Pride tallied their first double-double by a duo this season. Hofstra shot 51% (35-69) from the field including 10-for-21 (48%) from the three-point line. The Pride outrebounded the Seawolves, 59-30 in the contest as the Pride tallied 22 second-chance points.

Stony Brook, which hit 24 of 71 (34%) field goals attempts, was led by freshman Michael Almonacy with 15 points while senior Lucas Woodhouse added 10 points.

The Pride, coming off a solid performance in their loss to sixth-ranked Kentucky just two days ago, jumped on the Seawolves early behind strong shooting and defense and crashing the boards. Hofstra scored 10 of the first 12 points in the contest in building a 10-2 lead after just 3:24 following a Bernardi lay-up.

While Seawolves were cold from the floor, hitting just three of their first 18 shots, the Pride made nine of their first 18 and grabbed 16 of the first 24 rebounds to boost the lead to 20-6 after a Greer tip-in at the 11:28 mark. Hofstra poured it on and added long-range bombs to Stony Brook's problems by hitting five of nine three-pointers in the final 7:36 on the way to boosting the lead to 42-20 after a Powers' three-pointer with 1:54 to play in the half. Bernardi had six points on two three-pointers as did Wright-Foreman while Powers added five in the Pride spurt.

The Pride held on to a 44-24 lead at the break with Pemberton leading the way with 10 points while Powers added nine and Bernardi had eight in the first 20 minutes. Gustys added seven and grabbed 13 boards, including four in the offensive end. Stony Brook, which finished the half shooting 31% (11-36) from the field, was led by Almonacy with nine points of their 24 points.

It didn't get any better for Stony Brook in the second half as they were only able to cut the deficit to 18 at the start of the period. Leading 53-34 at the 15:47 mark following a Woodhouse three-pointer for the Seawolves, the Pride scored eight straight points as part of a 19-8 spurt that put Hofstra ahead, 72-42 at the 9:11 mark following a Powers lay-up.

Hofstra, which hit 17 of 31 field goals for a 55% clip in the second half, opened up its biggest lead of the half at 93-50 with 3:01 to play after two Pemberton free throws before settling for the Pride's biggest win of the season at 96-58.

Hofstra is now 20-5 all-time against Stony Brook.

Hofstra will break for finals exams before returning to action on Thursday, December 22 when they host the Saints of Siena at the Mack Sports Complex. Game time is 7 p.m.
