Davis, Calif. – Hofstra Women's Basketball served UC Davis its first loss of the season, battling to a 64-60 win at The Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. The Pride improved to 4-2 on the season and went 1-1 on its West Coast trip.
Junior
Ashunae Durant picked up her fourth consecutive double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while senior
Krystal Luciano put up 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Junior
Aleana Leon also finished with 10 points.
Morgan Bertsch led the UC Davis, who led by as much as 10 in the second quarter, with a double-double of her own with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Aggies (4-1) took an early 6-2 lead but five straight points from Leon gave Hofstra its first lead of the day. UC Davis quickly regained the advantage and held onto it for the remainder of the quarter, leading 20-11 at the end of the first, shooting 55.6 percent from the field in the frame.
Durant knocked down her first points of the day just over two minutes into the second quarter, cutting the deficit to eight after pulling down an offensive rebound. A pair of made free throws about halfway through the second quarter pushed the Aggies' lead back to 10, but Durant pulled down another offensive board and then was fouled on the put-back, hitting her free throw to complete the three-point play to make it 30-23.
Two more free throws and a steal from Durant and an acrobatic layup after an offensive rebound from Luciano brought the Pride back within three. Freshman
Ana Hernandez Gil chucked up a three-pointer with 11 seconds to tie it at 30, but the Aggies came back and knocked down a try of their own to lead 33-30 at the break.
Dongmo and Luciano made a pair of layups early in the third to get the lead back for Hofstra, but UC Davis answered to pull ahead by one. But then three-pointers became a difference-maker for the Pride, with Luciano knocking down a pair, Durant hitting just the second of her career and junior
Olivia Askin hitting her second of the day to take a 46-41 lead with about three minutes left in the third.
The Aggies knotted the score at 50 early in the fourth quarter before Dani Nafekh made a three to give UC Davis the lead back. Leon knocked down a long-range jumper to quickly pull the Pride back within one. After the Aggies had taken a four-point lead, Leon came up with a key steal and senior
Sydni Epps hit a three. Leon then put up a layup for a one-point Pride lead with 1:23 to go. Epps then picked up two of her own offensive rebounds, draining the second put-back for a 61-58 lead with 41.5 seconds remaining. With Hofstra up 62-60 with 22.1 seconds to go, Bertsch missed her shot, and the Aggies fouled Luciano. Luciano missed both free throws, but Durant came up with the rebound on the second, and was fouled, hitting both of her shots from the line for the final 64-60 score.
Hofstra now has a week off, hitting the road again next weekend to play at Buffalo on Sunday.
