Sacramento, Calif. – Hofstra Women's Basketball put up a season-high 85 points, but Sacramento State's high-scoring brand of play overpowered the Pride, 97-85, on Friday afternoon at The Nest.
Hofstra (3-2) finished with three players in double figures and two with double-doubles, taking a second-quarter lead. Junior
Ashunae Durant put up her third consecutive double-double, posting a career-high 23 points and tied-for-career-high 17 rebounds while senior
Krystal Luciano finished with 10 points and 11 assists. Junior
Aleana Leon tied a personal best with 15 points.
Five Sacramento State players finished in double digits as well, led by Maranne Johnson with 22 points, erasing Hofstra's advantage at halftime and pushing the lead in the second half. Margaret Huntington pulled down 17 rebounds.
After the Hornets (2-4) had gotten out to a 7-0 lead, the Pride worked its way back, causing three straight turnovers before freshman
Sandra Karsten's first collegiate three-pointer knotted the score at seven. A 14-0 Hornets' run put Sacramento State up 21-7 with about four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Luciano snapped the run with a trey, but the Hornets answered quickly with one of their own. An 8-0 Hofstra run cut Sacramento State's lead to 24-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Aleana Leon brought the Pride within three early in the second quarter. Luciano's trey moments later cut Sacramento State's to just one. Another fast-break shot from the paint knotted the score at 34 with about six minutes left in the second quarter. A pair of made free throws from junior
Ashunae Durant gave Hofstra its first lead of the day. After a back-and-forth battle for the remainder of the quarter, the Hornets hit a long-range three at the buzzer to take a 50-48 lead at the half.
Back-to-back threes from Johnson pushed Sacramento State's lead to 61-53 with 6:39 left in the third quarter. The Hornets then broke away behind hot shooting from beyond the arc, knocking down 16 total threes on the day. The Pride continued to fight, putting together an 8-0 run late in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 93-80 with 1:38 to go. But Hofstra couldn't make up any more ground, as the Hornets finished on top, 97-85.
The Pride concludes its West Coast trip Sunday at UC Davis with a 1 p.m. PST/4 p.m. EST matchup.
