Sandra Dongmo each recorded double-doubles to lead four Pride players in double-figure scoring as Hofstra defeated Delaware State, 64-44 in a non-conference game at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Tuesday night. The Pride improved to 3-1 on the season while the Hornets slipped to 1-4.
Durant tallied 13 points and 14 rebounds to post the 19th double-double of her career and second this season. Dongmo tallied 10 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of her career. Junior
Aleana Leon tallied 13 points and grabbed seven boards while freshman
Ana Hernandez Gil, who blew the game open with 12 second-quarter points, finished with 12 points.
Delaware State was led by freshman Gennell Addison with nine points while sophomore NaJai Pollard added eight points and 12 rebounds. The Hornets shot just 29 percent (20-69) from the field.
After a slow start that saw both teams combine to go 0-for-9 from the field over the first 3:12, Hofstra's
Olivia Askin hit a lay-up to give the Pride a 4-0 lead. The Hornets tied the game on baskets by Addison and Aaliyah Davis.
Hofstra then went on an 11-2 run, including nine straight points, to open up a 15-6 lead with 1:22 to play in the first quarter after a
Sydni Epps jumper. Epps had five points in the spurt while Leon tallied the other five. Addison hit a three-pointer for Delaware State and the Pride closed out the period with a free throw and a lay-up as Hofstra held on to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter. The Pride posted seven steals in the first 10 minutes.
The Pride opened up the contest in the second quarter after the Hornets opened the period by outscoring the Hofstra, 6-4 on baskets by Addison, Pollard and Davis to cut the deficit to 22-15 at the 6:51 mark. But the Pride went on a 20-6 tear the rest of the period, hitting five three-pointers, to double up Delaware State, 42-21 at halftime. Hernandez Gil, who started the run with three consecutive three-pointers and added a fourth later in the quarter, tallied 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the three-point arc. Leon added five points during the run.
Hofstra hit 9-of-17 field goals including 5-of-9 from the three-point line in the second quarter to open up the 21-point lead. The Delaware State effort in the first half was stymied 33 percent shooting from the field and 15 turnovers in the half.
The third quarter was a low-scoring affair with only 13 points scored during the first seven minutes as the Pride held a 49-27 lead. But the scoring picked up in the final 2:08 but the Pride didn't lose any ground as the Hornets outscored Hofstra, 5-4 during that time as the Pride held a 53-30 lead after three quarters.
Despite being outscored 14-11 in the final quarter, Hofstra didn't allow the Hornets to get any closer than 19 points and that was with 2:23 to play after Lanayjha Ashe's jumper made it 61-42.
Hofstra will head out on the road for three consecutive contests with two in California this weekend. The Pride will face Sacramento State on Friday at 5 p.m. (ET) before traveling to UC Davis on Sunday for a 4 p.m. (ET) tilt.
