Annapolis, Md. – Hofstra Women's Basketball suffered its first loss of the season, as Navy made 11 three-pointers to take a 78-69 win at Alumni Hall on Friday night.
Hofstra hit a season-high 10 three-pointers of its own, led by five from freshman
Ana Hernandez Gil, who led the Pride with 15 points, marking her first career game in double figures. After leading the Colonial Athletic Association in double-doubles last season, junior
Ashunae Durant picked up her first of the season, finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Maryland native freshman
E'Lexus Davis put up nine points, four assists, two steals and one block in front of her hometown crowd.
Navy had three players finish in double figures, led by Taylor Dunham with 20 points. The Midshipmen shot 46.6 percent from the field, 55.0 percent from three-point range and 86.7 percent from the free-throw line, taking a 34-31 lead late in the second quarter and never again relinquishing the advantage.
Junior
Olivia Askin opened the scoring for Hofstra, knocking down a three-pointer to give the Pride a 3-2 lead. The teams traded field goals before Taylor Dunham hit a trey of her own to put Navy ahead, 9-7, just over three minutes in. Senior
Sydni Epps then brought Hofstra back even at nine. A pair of Navy three-pointers gave the Midshipmen a 17-14 lead with about two minutes left in the quarter to take a 17-15 advantage into the quarter break.
Hernandez Gil made a pair of shots from beyond the arc to give Hofstra a 21-19 lead early in the second frame, but Navy quickly evened the score once again. After the Midshipmen had taken the lead, freshman
Marianne Kalin made a layup and drew a foul, completing the three-point play to knot the score at 31.
After Navy had taken a 44-37 lead in the third, freshman
E'Lexus Davis powered through a pair of defenders and found junior
Aleana Leon to cut the deficit back to five with about six minutes left in the frame. Another pair of threes from Hernandez Gil helped boost the Pride late in the third quarter.
Davis hit a jumper and then came up with a steal for a fast-break layup to bring it to 64-55 with about seven minutes to go as Hofstra pushed to rally. After Davis made a free throw, Hofstra came up with another steal on the in-bounds play. Davis then blocked a shot at the other end to give possession back to the Pride. Hernandez Gil hit another three to cut the deficit back to six with under a minute to go. After Navy had pulled back to a 74-64 lead, Luciano hit a shot from beyond the arc and Hofstra called a timeout with 23.1 seconds to go, but a Navy layup with two seconds to go sealed the win, 78-69.
The Pride heads back home to take on Delaware State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday before heading to the west coast to face Sacramento State and UC Davis.
