Riverdale, NY – Sophomore
Justin Wright-Foreman had a career-high 17 points and freshman
Eli Pemberton scored in double figures (15 points) for the third straight time to open his Hofstra career, but it wasn't enough as the Pride Men's Basketball team fell to Manhattan, 80-68, on Friday evening at Draddy Gymnasium.
The loss drops the Pride to 1-2 on the season, while the Jaspers improve to 1-2.
Hofstra jumped out to an early 11-4 lead in the game just over four minutes in after a three-pointer from Pemberton.
The Jaspers would respond immediately with a 13-1 run to make it 17-12 in favor of Manhattan following a three-pointer from Zavier Turner.
Hofstra closed the gap to four later in first half on a number of possessions but Manhattan took an eight-point lead into the break as Aaron Walker Jr. scored with a second remaining before the intermission to make it 42-34.
Manhattan opened up a 12-point lead on a multitude of occasions early in the second stanza before Hofstra scored six straight points, including four from Wright-Foreman, to cut the deficit to 64-58.
That would be as close as the Pride would get, though, as the Jaspers turned a 66-60 lead into a 14-point advantage with an 8-0 run that culminated with a pair of free throws from Thomas Capuano.
Hofstra will head south to Estero, Florida for the Gulf Coast Showcase next week as the Pride opens tournament play against Bradley on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 22-41 all-time against Manhattan. Manhattan won the last meeting prior to tonight, 66-59, in Hempstead during the 2013-14 season. The Pride won 71-58 in Riverdale in 2010-11.
- With his 15 points, Pemberton is only the second player in the Pride's Colonial Athletic Association era (since 2001) to score in double figures in each of his first three games in a Hofstra uniform.
- Wright-Foreman's previous career-high of nine points occurred on a pair of occasions, most recently vs. Coppin State earlier this season.
