Estero, FL – Senior guard
Deron Powers scored a team-high 19 points and hit a driving layup with .5 seconds left to lift the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to a thrilling 92-90 victory over Bradley on Monday afternoon at the Gulf Coast Showcase at Germain Arena.
Hofstra inbounded the ball with 7.4 seconds left and Powers took possession of the ball off a pass from junior
Ty Greer. Powers would then drive nearly the length of the court and hit the game-winner. It marked the first last second win by Hofstra since Charles Jenkins drained a 35-footer against William & Mary to give the Pride an 81-78 win over the Tribe on February 15, 2011.
The win evens Hofstra's record at 2-2 this season, while Bradley sees its record move to 2-2 as well.
Bradley got a game-high 34 points from Darrell Brown.
Hofstra placed a total of six players in double figures as Greer (17), senior
Brian Bernardi (15), sophomore
Justin Wright-Foreman (12), junior
Rokas Gustys (11) and freshman
Eli Pemberton (10) joined Powers.
Despite scoring 43 first half points, the Pride would go into the break trailing by three as Bradley shot a blistering 63% from the field.
Five early points from Greer helped the Pride to early 6-0 and 11-3 leads.
A pair of free throws from junior
Hunter Sabety with 12:02 left in the opening stanza allowed Hofstra to still hold a seven-point advantage at 23-16. The Braves mounted their first rally of the game and used a 10-3 scoring run to knot the game at 26 following a three-pointer from Nate Kennell.
A close first half would see Bradley add an 8-3 run to take its largest lead of the half at 46-40 before a three-pointer from Wright-Foreman closed the first half scoring with 30 seconds remaining.
Bradley pushed the lead to seven, 52-45, less than two minutes into the second half after a Brown three-pointer. Hofstra would rally, though, and used an 11-5 run to earn a 57-56 lead following a trifecta from junior
Jamall Robinson.
Hofstra would hold a 72-65 advantage with 9:11 to play in regulation before Bradley fought its way back and used a 12-2 run to lead 77-74 with just over six minutes left.
A three-pointer from Bernardi would knot the game at 77 with 4:42 left and even the score, setting it up for an exciting finish.
Hofstra pushed the lead back to four as Powers hit a pair of free throws with 1:29 left but Brown continued his tremendous day for Bradley and would hit two three-pointers in the final 30 seconds to put the finish in Powers' hands.
Gustys added 12 rebounds to his point total, while Powers had five assists as well. Hofstra was a strong 25-28 (89%) from the charity stripe to help the Pride win the tight contest.
McGlaston added 14 points and Koch Bar chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.
Hofstra will now face Vermont in its next game of the Gulf Coast Showcase at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
