Stony Brook, N.Y. – Behind a career-high 22 points from junior
Ashunae Durant, Hofstra Women's Basketball battled past Stony Brook, 67-64, to improve to 2-0 on the season on Monday night at Island Federal Credit Union Arena.
In a back-and-forth battle that never saw either team lead by more than seven, the Pride recovered from cold shooting in the first half to take the win. Hofstra shot 27.8 percent and 26.7 percent from the field in the first two quarters, respectively, before knocking down 50 percent and 60 percent of its shots from the field in the third and fourth quarters. Durant was one rebound away from a double-double, finishing with nine boards to go with her first 20+ point game of the season. Junior
Aleana Leon also scored in double figures, recording 12 points and four rebounds.
Stony Brook (0-2) had three players score in double digits, led by Elizabeth Manner's 16 points. Aaliyah Worley pulled down 10 boards.
For the second straight game, senior
Sydni Epps was responsible for the Pride's first points, putting Hofstra up, 2-0. After a low-scoring remainder of the quarter, Epps hit a three-pointer as the shot clock was expiring to give the Pride an 11-7 lead in the final minute of the first frame. Stony Brook pulled two back before the quarter expired, and knotted the game at 11 early in the second.
The Seawolves then pulled ahead by two, but Durant's jumper about midway through the second quarter brought Hofstra back even. On the Pride's next possession, Durant drove to the basket and took the lead back.
After Stony Brook had taken a 17-15 lead, junior
Olivia Askin knocked down a long-range three to regain the advantage for Hofstra. Freshman
Marianne Kalin made a layup and then forced an offensive foul at the other end to head to the free-throw line, going 2-for-2 to give the Pride a 22-17 lead.
A pair of Seawolves' treys allowed Stony Brook to take back the advantage, 23-22, heading into halftime.
The teams continued to trade leads early in the third quarter, before Stony Brook's Kori Bayne-Walker put up five straight points to put the Seawolves up, 34-28.
Leon knocked down a three-pointer moments later to bring Hofstra back within three at 36-33 before freshman
Sandra Karsten's layup once again made it a one-point game. Leon then picked up an offensive rebound and took back the lead for Hofstra. But Stony Brook once again battled back, taking ja 42-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
Durant made a shot and drew a foul to open the fourth quarter, knocking down the free throw to give Hofstra a one-point advantage. Karsten pushed the lead to three, but a three-pointer from Elizabeth Manner evened it at 45.
Senior
Krystal Luciano knocked down a trey of her own with just over seven minutes left. Durant picked up an offensive rebound and drew a foul, completing the three-point play to put Hofstra up, 51-47.
The Seawolves used free throws to pull within one, 57-56, with just over two minutes to play, but Luciano scored four straight points for the Pride. Stony Brook took to fouling, and Kalin once again made a pair of free throws for a 63-56 lead with 38.7 seconds left.
Manner then sunk a three-pointer and Bayne-Walker made a layup to pull within three with 9.5 seconds to go. Durant knocked down a pair of free throws, but Bayne-Walker picked up an and-one play at the other end to make it a two-point game with 3.7 seconds left, but Leon made a free throw to seal the win at 67-64.
The Pride stays on the road this week, heading to Navy on Friday for a 7 p.m. game.
