WBB: Hofstra Cruises To Opening Night Win Over Marist

Hempstead, NY - Junior Ashunae Durant led all scorers with 19 points and senior Krystal Luciano posted nine points, six assists and six rebounds as Hofstra opened the 2016-17 campaign with a 62-42 win over visiting Marist at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Friday evening.

Hofstra (1-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, holding the Red Foxes scoreless for the first 2:40. Olivia Askin had a three-pointer, while Sydni Epps and Durant added two points each. Following a Marist (0-1) basket, the lead would expand to 11, 13-2, after a pair of free throws from Durant with 4:48 left in the opening stanza. The Pride would lead at the end of the first quarter, 22-8, behind 10 points from Durant. Hofstra shot 53 percent from the floor in the period, while limiting Marist to a 20 percent shooting percentage.

The second quarter started a bit more even with Marist outscoring the Pride, 7-5, over the first five minutes. The Red Foxes had gotten within nine, 24-15, after a jumper from Hannah Hand with 7:32 on the clock. But Petja Krupenko netted the first points of her career on a three-pointer to give the Pride back a double-digit advantage at 27-15 with 5:22 to play in the quarter. Marist had another offensive spurt in the final four minutes to get within seven, 28-21, with 2:33 to play on a layup from Maura Fitzpatrick. Marist would cut the Pride lead to six, 28-22, on a free throw from Claire Oberdorf and the two teams traded baskets in the final minute as the Pride took a 30-24 lead into halftime.

The second half was more of the same as Marist would get within seven on two occasions in third period, but the Pride responded and took a 12-point lead at the end of the third period, 47-35. The Pride closed the period on a 10-5 run behind four points from Luciano and three from Sandra Karsten.  

The Pride scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to open a 53-35 lead with 4:49 to go in the game. Durant had a basket and a free throw sandwiched around a three-pointer from Luciano. Marist pulled within 11, 53-42, following a 7-0 run. But Hofstra scored the last nine points to pick up the 20-point win.

Epps finished with a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with four points. Aleana Leon had seven rebounds and three steals for the Pride.

Marist was led by Fitzpatrick's 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Allie Clement chipped in with 10 points.

Hofstra is back in action Monday when it travels to Long Island rival Stony Brook for a 7 p.m. tip.

Notes:
-Hofstra improved to 8-1 all-time in the series with Marist.
-The Pride is now 4-1 in their last five season openers and is 7-4 in opening games under Coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey.
-Hofstra scored 23 points off 19 Marist turnovers.
