FH: Marin Samper Breaks Assists Record But Hofstra Falls At #9 Delaware

Newark, DE – Stella Schoen and Lara Bittel scored goals and Claudia Marin Samper broke the Hofstra career assists record but ninth-ranked Delaware scored the first four goals of the contest on the way to a 7-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Pride at Fred Rullo Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra, which had its seven-game winning streak snapped, slips to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in the CAA. The Blue Hens of Delaware, which extended their winning streak to eight games, improved to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Bittel, the freshman from Munich, Germany, scored her fourth goal of the year 11:33 into the second half off a pass from sophomore Madison Sauve. But by that time, the Blue Hens had built a 4-0 lead on three first half goals and one just 3:36 into the second half.

Schoen, the senior from Hamburg, Germany, tallied her tenth goal of the year with 5:57 to play in the contest to move the score to 7-2. It was Schoen's 43rd goal of her career which moves her into a tie for seventh place on the Hofstra career goals chart with Edith Gallagher (43 from 1986-89).

Classmate Claudia Marin Samper assisted on Schoen's goal for her 35th career helper to break Genna Kovar's (2008-11) school record of 34. Marin Samper is now just 10 points away from breaking Kovar's career points mark of 148 while her 52 career goals is six shy of breaking Kovar's school mark of 57.

The Blue Hens showed why they are the ninth-ranked team in the country early in the contest as Meghan Winesett scored her third goal of the year off a rebound at the 6:11 mark. Kayla Devlin tallied back-to-back goals 4:03 apart to open a 3-0 lead at the 18:30 mark. The Blue Hens outshot the Pride, 12-1 in the first half and took seven penalty corners. Hofstra goalie Lauren Saltus made five of her 11 saves in the first half.

Lisa Giezeman boosted the UD lead to 4-0 at the 38:36 mark on a tip-in before Bittel scored her goal for the Pride. But Greta Nauck scored her 16th of the year, Sabrina Rhodes notched her third of the year and Ally Pollak tallied her fifth of the season in a three-minute span to open up a 7-1 advantage at the 54:51 mark.

Delaware outshot Hofstra in the contest, 23-6 and took 10 penalty corners to the Pride's two.

The Pride return to CAA action on Friday, October 14 when Hofstra entertains the Huskies of Northeastern University at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 3 p.m.
