FH: Hofstra Falls To Northeastern In CAA Battle

Hempstead, NY – Senior Colby Hussong assisted on both Hofstra goals in the first half but the Northeastern Huskies scored twice in the second half to break a 2-2 halftime deadlock and post a 4-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Pride at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.

Hofstra dropped its second consecutive CAA contest to slip to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Northeastern, which snapped a two-game losing skid, improved to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the CAA.

In an evenly played contest statistically, the Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 22 minutes of the contest. Junior Jamie Bartucca opened the scoring at the 9:24 mark with her seventh goal of the year, picking up her own rebound and beating Hofstra senior goalie Lauren Saltus (3 saves). Huskies senior Natalie Stewart gave Northeastern a 2-0 advantage at the 21:19 mark with a high backhanded shot that banged off the crossbar and into the goal.

Hofstra got back into the contest less than two minutes later when senior Stella Schoen scored her 11th goal of the year with Hussong and fellow senior Claudia Marin Samper assisting off the penalty corner. Schoen's goal was the 44th of her career that moved her into seventh-place, ahead of Edith Gallagher (43 from 1986-89), on the Hofstra career goals list.

The two points also gives Schoen 114 in her career, tying her with Jonel Boileau (114 from 2011-14) for fifth place on the Pride career points chart.

The Pride tied the game at the 24:56 mark when Hussong sent a short pass from the top of the circle to Marin Samper who hit a backhanded shot that beat Northeastern senior goalie Becky Garner (4 saves). It was Marin Samper's 15th goal of the year and 53rd of her career as she inches closer to the school record of 57 set by Genna Kovar (2008-11).

Marin Samper's three points on the day also gives her 142 in her career, which is just seven points from breaking Kovar's mark of 148.

Northeastern took the lead in the 55th minute when Stewart scored her second of the game and fourth of the season off a pass from sophomore Laura MacLachlan following a penalty corner. Sophomore Kellie Stigas added an unassisted insurance goal at the 61:13 mark for her third tally of the season.

The Pride had a couple of good looks at the goal in the waning minutes but Garner came up with two point blank saves of blasts from Schoen to preserve the victory. The Huskies outshot Hofstra, 14-12 and took six penalty corners to Hofstra's five.

Hofstra returns to action next Friday, October 21 when the Pride travel to Philadelphia for a CAA contest at Drexel at 7 p.m.
