FH: Marin Samper Leads Hofstra Over Towson In CAA Opener

Towson, MD – Senior Claudia Marin Samper tallied two goals and classmate Emily Gallagher added two assists to lead the Hofstra Pride to their seventh consecutive victory with a 3-0 decision over the Towson Tigers in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at Johnny Unitas Stadium Friday night.

The Pride improved to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in the CAA while Towson slips to 2-10 on the year and 0-3 in conference play.

The Pride, who defeated the Tigers, 9-0 in Hempstead in 2015, dominated the play but were stymied by the Towson defense early on, especially by junior goalie Emilee Woodall, who made nine first half saves.

But Hofstra broke through in the 21st minute. Senior Stella Schoen sent a pass toward the Tiger goal that was deflected by a Towson defender. The ball squirted through to Marin Samper, who buried her 13th goal of the season for a 1-0 advantage.

Hofstra boosted the lead to 2-0 just 1:22 before halftime when senior co-captain Emily Gallagher fed Marin Samper for her second of the game and 14th of the season. It was Marin Samper's 52nd career goal, just five away from tying Hofstra career leader Genna Kovar (57 from 2008-11). The Pride outshot the Tigers, 14-1 and had 10 penalty corners while Towson had none.

Hofstra continued its dominance in the second half, outshooting the Tigers, 11-0 and taking eight more penalty corners to one for Towson. But Woodall made six more saves for the Tigers in the final 35 minutes to keep the game close.

Pride graduate-student Marloes Schavemaker closed out the scoring at the 65:16 mark, taking a pass from Gallagher off a penalty corner and beating Woodall for the 3-0 final.

The Pride outshot Towson in the game, 25-1 and took 18 penalty corners to the Tigers' 1. Hofstra senior goalie Lauren Saltus needed to make just one save to post her eighth victory in nine decisions.

Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, October 9 when they move up I-95 to face the ninth-ranked Blue Hens of Delaware at Fred Rullo Stadium. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
