Wilmington, NC – Hofstra Men's Soccer was served its first Colonial Athletic Association loss of the season Saturday night at UNCW Soccer Field, falling to the Seahawks, 3-1, to drop to 8-5-1 overall and 6-1 in conference.
UNCW (7-2-2, 2-0-2 CAA) took a 2-0 lead in the first half, but freshman
Luke Brown netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 54th minute before the Seahawks tacked on a late insurance goal.
UNCW struck early, at the 10:27 mark, when Phillip Goodrum sent a crossing pass to Kalvin Kromer who blasted a one-timer to the far post that beat Hofstra goalie
Alex Ashton for a 1-0 lead.
The Seahawks boosted their lead to 2-0 at the 20:00 mark when Matt Morgen sent a quick outlet pass to Julio Moncada who fired a shot that found the back of the net. The Seahawks outshot the Pride, 3-2 in the first half. Both Ashton and UNCW goalkeeper Ryan Cretens each made one save in the first 45 minutes.
Hofstra cut the deficit to 2-1 just 8:55 into the second half when Brown picked up a loose ball and beat Cretens on a shot to the near post. But the Seahawks put the nail in the coffin with just 5:59 to play in regulation as David Lozano sent a pass into the center for Moncada who fired a bullet from 16 yards into the Pride goal.
Hofstra will take a short hiatus from conference play, heading to No. 1 Maryland on Friday before hosting Binghamton for Senior Day on Oct. 25.
