WBB: Hofstra Drops Close One To Elon On Late Free Throws

Elon, N.C. – Sophomore forward Ashunae Durant posted a double-double and her put-back basket gave Hofstra a one-point lead with 17 seconds left, but Elon's Shay Burnett drew foul on  baseline drive and hit both free throws with seven seconds left as Hofstra fell, 61-60, in a back-and-forth Colonial Athletic Association matchup Friday night at Alumni Gym.

Durant notched her sixth double-double of the season by logging 10 points and 11 rebounds and junior guard Kelly Loftus scored all 12 points in the second half. But the final two of Burnett's game-high 18 points gave the Phoenix the victory. Burnett had 11 rebounds and four Elon players scored in double figures as the Phoenix improved to 9-4 and 2-0. Hofstra saw a three-game winning streak snapped in falling to 10-3 and 1-1.

Junior guard Krystal Luciano scored a team-high 17 points and tallied four rebounds and three assists. Luciano hit a pair of fourth-quarter three-pointers to help Hofstra erase a three-point deficit and take a 56-50 lead halfway through the final period.

Loftus extended the lead to 58-54, though Elon cut it to two on Malaya Johnson's layup just inside of two minutes. Johnson finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Burnett galvanized the crowd with a three-point play that put Elon ahead, 59-58, with 52.4 seconds left. But Durant did her best to help Hofstra win in the final minute at Elon for a second straight season. The regining CAA Rookie of the Year got two offensive rebounds and scored off the second missed basket. Her put-back gave Hofstra a 60-59 lead with 17 seconds left while drawing a foul.

A missed free throw gave Elon the ball back, though the Phoenix missed a shot that Jennifer Rhodes was able to get off the carom for the offensive rebound. Rhodes had 13 points and five rebounds, which all came on the offensive glass. That set up Burnett's drive to the paint that resulted in a foul. She made both free throws and Hofstra could not score on either of its two field goal attempts in the final possession as Elon held on for the win.

Senior Asia Jackson scored eight points off the bench for Hofstra and junior Sandra Dongmo added nine rebounds as a reserve.

Hofstra generated a halftime lead for the 11th time in 13 games this season, but Elon took the lead in the opening minute of the third quarter. Luciano and Loftus knocked down back-to-back three-pointers and Durant scored on an inside basket. Following another defensive stop, White drew a foul and hit a free throw for a 9-0 run with four different scorers for a 38-30 Hofstra lead.

Elon trailed by as much as nine in the third but ended the period on an 8-0 run, capped by Brown's jumper, to take a 47-46 lead into the final quarter.

Hofstra utilized a 6-0 run to take a 25-17 lead in the second quarter. Luciano tallied seven points in the opening half to lift Hofstra to a 29-26 edge over the Phoenix entering the break.

A strong defensive effort held Elon to a lone three-pointer in the opening half. Jackson added the offensive punch by scoring six points as a reserve to key a 9-0 first-quarter run that put Hofstra up, 11-6. Luciano added five points in a back-and-forth opening period that ended in a 15-all tie.

Hofstra will continue a three-game road swing on Sunday at 2 p.m. against the College of Charleston. The Pride won both games in last season's meetings, including a 69-57 victory at TD Arena.
