WBB: Jackson’s Career-High 24 Points Lifts Hofstra To A Comeback Win At Charleston

Charleston. S.C. – Hofstra senior guard Asia Jackson scored a career-high 24 points off the bench and senior guard Darius Faulk added nine points and eight assists to power a 62-58 come-from-behind victory over the College of Charleston in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup Sunday afternoon at TD Arena.

Jackson knocked down a career-high four three-pointers and scored 16 second-half points to help Hofstra post its first road CAA victory of the season as the Pride improved to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. Charleston's Jackie Luna-Castro scored a team-high 20 points, but the Cougars fell to 5-9 and 0-3. CofC wrapped a stretch in which the Cougars faced the top-three teams in the preseason coaches' poll to start conference play.

Sophomore forward Ashunae Durant nearly posted a double-double with eight points and eight rebounds to help Hofstra erase a nine-point Charleston lead. The Hofstra reserves, led by Jackson, helped the Pride's bench out-scored the Cougars' reserves, 33-8.

Hofstra went 12-for-12 from the free-throw line, keyed by Jackson's 8-for-8 showing. It was the first time Hofstra shot 100 percent from the free throw line since the Pride also went 12-for-12 at Delaware on Feb. 17, 2008.

Junior center Sandra Dongmo contributed four points and four rebounds off the bench for Hofstra. Breanna Bolden scored13 points and notched 12 rebounds for Charleston and Kelsey Booth scored nine points and contributed six rebounds.

Hofstra had the lead for just 1:33 of the contest entering the fourth quarter down by four. But Faulk's three-point play off the period's first possession brought Hofstra within one, and Faulk answered a Charleston basket with another field goal to make it 45-44 lead for the Cougars.

Faulk then connected with senior guard Jakelle King-Gilchrist with a hard pass on the low right block for Hofstra's first lead since the opening quarter and a 46-45 lead with 6:31 left.

Junior guard Krystal Luciano helped generate a defensive stop and connected on a runner for a 48-45 edge. Junior forward Anjie White then hit a layup down low for an 8-0 run that gave the Pride a game-high five-point edge entering the final media timeout.

Charleston's Dajah Logan's jumper tied the score at 50, though Jackson gave the Pride the lead for good when she drew a foul and hit both free throws with 3:04 left. Faulk then generated a steal and initiated a fast break that Jackson ended with a layup to make it 54-50. Charleston moved within two points, but Jackson made a driving layup to beat the shot clock for a 56-52 lead.

Charleston tried to reestablish control in the third quarter, keyed by Booth's three-pointer and Luna-Castro's power move inside extended Charleston's lead to 41-33. King-Gilchrist then gave the Pride a lift by completing a three-point play and Jackson's three-pointer brought Hofstra within 43-39 entering the fourth.

Jackson scored eight points and the Hofstra bench posted a 12-0 scoring advantage over its counterparts to help the Pride erase a nine-point deficit to head into halftime tied at 26. Dongmo added four points and four rebounds in the half as the Pride nearly had half of its total offensive output come from the reserves.

Luna-Castro scored 12 points in the opening half, including eight in the first quarter. Her efforts keyed a 10-0 first-quarter run put the Cougars ahead 12-4, and kept the Pride off the scoreboard for more than five minutes. Jackson's left corner three-pointer ended the run, though the Cougars took a 16-9 lead after a mistake-prone opening quarter in which the teams combined for 17 turnovers.

The Pride improved to 3-2 in the all-time series, including three straight wins after being swept in the 2013-14 season series. Hofstra entered the week ranked 17th in the latest Women's Mid-Major top-25 poll.

Hofstra will cap a three-game road trip on Friday at UNCW. Tipoff is set for 11:30 a.m. from Trask Coliseum.
