WBB: Hofstra Wins CAA Opener In Milestone Victory For Coach Kilburn-Steveskey

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra outscored Delaware, 21-12, in the second period to open up a double-digit lead on its way to a 58-49 win over Delaware in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both schools Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The victory was the 163rd in the career of Hofstra Coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey, moving her to the top position on the program's all-time win list.

The Pride withstood a third period run by Delaware, but held off the Blue Hens by outscoring them in the fourth period, 17-13. Juniors Krystal Luciano and Kelly Loftus, and sophomore Ashunae Durant led the Pride with 13 points each.

Hofstra improved to 10-4 on the season and 1-0 in CAA play with its third consecutive victory. Delaware, which lost for the fifth time in six games, is 5-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Kilburn-Steveskey, who is in her 10th season at the helm, moved past Harvey Pyser on the career wins list at Hofstra. Pyser posted 162 wins in 10 seasons from 1977-87.

Following a Luciano three-pointer to open the scoring, the Blue Hens went on a 7-0 run to take a 7-3 lead midway through the opening 10 minutes. Durant ended Hofstra's scoreless drought of 5:12 with a layup on the break. Loftus tied the game at nine for the Pride with her first basket of the game with a minute to play. Hofstra would take the lead, 10-9, with 4 seconds left on senior Asia Jackson's free throw and ended the opening stanza with the one-point advantage.

Hofstra would extend the lead to six, 15-9, after a personal 5-0 run for senior Darius Faulk to open the second period. Senior Jakelle King-Gilchrist would give Hofstra a seven-point lead, 22-15, with a fast break layup off a steal with 4:21 to play in the second.  Following a Delaware bucket, Loftus answered with a long-range three-pointer to extend the lead to 25-17. The Blue Hens would cut the lead to six on their next possession, but Luciano converted a four-point play to put Hofstra up 10, 29-19, with 1:46 to go before intermission. The teams traded baskets to close the half and the Pride went into halftime with the 10-point lead.

Loftus extended the Pride's lead to 16, 37-21, with a pair of three-pointers to begin the third period.  Delaware then went on an 11-0 run over the next 4:25 to pull within five, 37-32, with 3:26 remaining in the period. Nicole Enabosi had six of the Blue Hens points in the surge, while Erika Brown added five. Durant stopped the Delaware run with a layup with 3:17 to go but the Blue Hens ran off four straight points to make it 39-36 in favor of the Pride with 1:34 to go in the period. The teams traded scoreless possessions before Loftus made two free throws with 3.4 seconds left to push the Hofstra lead back to five, 41-36, at the conclusion of the third period.

Neither team could get untracked offensively in the fourth period as both teams managed two points each over the first four-plus minutes. But Durant converted a three-point play to push the lead to eight and Jackson added a three-pointer to make it an 11-point lead, 51-40, with 4:36 remaining in the contest and the Blue Hens did not get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Brown led all scorers with 15 points for Delaware, while Enabosi added 11 points and seven rebounds. Makeda Nicholas had 10 points for the Blue Hens to go along with a game-high eight rebounds.

Durant, Luciano and junior Anjie White each had seven rebounds to pace the Pride. Jackson finished with eight points and six rebounds, which tied her career-high.

The Pride returns to action Friday, January 8 at Elon. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. The game is the first of three consecutive road contests for Hofstra.
