MBB: Green's Jumper In Final Seconds Lifts Hofstra Past Elon

Hempstead, NY - Senior guard Jaun'ya Green's jumper with two seconds remaining snapped a 64-64 tie and lifted the Pride to a 66-64 win over Elon Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra got another brilliant performance from sophomore forward Rokas Gustys, who posted his seventh consecutive double-double and 11th overall this season with 23 points and 19 rebounds. Senior forward Ameen Tanksley had 13 points, while Green added 12 points and six assists. Graduate forward Denton Koon posted 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Pride.

Hofstra won for the third straight game to improve to 15-6 overall and 7-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Pride remains tied atop the CAA standings with UNCW. Elon suffered its third consecutive loss to fall to 12-10 overall and 3-6 in the CAA.

Hofstra jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the first 3:32 behind four points from Gustys. The lead grew to 10, 12-2, with 13:48 to go after another bucket from Gustys. The Phoenix would battle back and eventually take their first lead of the game, 25-24, with 1:30 on the clock on a layup from Tyler Seibring. The Pride would regain the lead eight seconds later following a three-pointer from Koon and took the 27-25 advantage into halftime. Gustys was dominant in the opening stanza with 10 points on 5-7 shooting and 10 rebounds.

The Pride opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take a 36-25 lead and force Elon to call a timeout with 17:33 on the clock. Tanksley had five straight points in the spurt. Hofstra's lead would grow to as much as 13 on multiple occasions. The Phoenix cut their deficit to six, 62-56, with three minutes to go and after two missed free throws by the Pride, a three-pointer from Dainan Swoope made it a three-point game with 2:27 to play. After a Pride free throw, a Seibring three-pointer made it a one-point game and a dunk from Christian Hairston put Elon on top, 64-63, with 1:12 to play. Koon would tie the score at 64 with a free throw with 36 seconds to go. Elon would miss the front end of a one-and-one with 17 ticks left and after Gustys grabbed the rebound, Green would dribble to the left side and sink a jumper from just inside the three-point line for the win. Elon had one last shot, but a desperation half-court shot was blocked by freshman Desure Buie as time expired.

Gustys had a career-high 17 defensive rebounds and shot 10-13 from the field.

Dmitri Thompson led Elon with 17 points, while Hairston added 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Pride is back in action Saturday afternoon at Drexel. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. in Philadelphia.
