WBB: Hofstra Downs Towson For Fifth Straight Victory

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra used an 8-0 run late in the fourth period to take control of a tightly-contested game and went on to a 64-60 win over Towson Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Hofstra outscored the Tigers, 21-17, in the fourth after entering the period tied at 43. The win was Hofstra's fifth straight.

Senior guard Asia Jackson came off the bench to score 20 points to lead the Pride. Junior guard Kelly Loftus had 14 points, while junior forward Anjie White posted her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Darius Faulk also had 12 points and added seven assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Ashunae Durant posted a game-high 15 rebounds, matching her season best.

Hofstra improved to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association on the season. Towson slipped to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in CAA play. The 15-3 record after 18 games is the best in program history. Hofstra is also 8-0 at home in 2015-16, matching the 2003-04 squad's home record after eight games.

Neither team got off to a quick start as the teams combined for three points in the first four minutes. The Tigers went up 7-1 with 4:51 to play in the opening period after five straight points from Dominique Johnson. A 6-2 run by the Pride brought Hofstra within two, 9-7. White had five of the Pride's points in the run.  But the Tigers closed out the period with an 8-4 run to lead 17-11 after the opening 10 minutes.

Hofstra came out inspired in the second period, taking a 20-18 lead 3:03 into the period, following a 9-1 run. Jackson had five straight points for the Pride, tying the score at 18 with a three-pointer followed by the go-ahead layup. Johnson answered for the Tigers with a three-pointer, but Jackson put the Pride back up, 23-21, with a three-pointer with 6:02 on the clock. Towson used a 6-0 run to go back up, 27-23, with 2:36 to play. The Pride scored five straight points to close the period, taking a 28-27 lead on Jackson's three-pointer with 18 seconds left. Jackson had 12 points in the opening half including all three of the Pride's three-point field goals.

The Tigers took a 34-30 lead early in the third period, but Hofstra responded with a 7-0 run to take a 37-34 lead with 5:18 to play on Loftus' layup. Towson rallied to take a 43-39 lead with 1:31 to play in the stanza on Sianni Martin's layup. Hofstra would score the final four points of the period including a layup from Faulk with one second left that tied the score at 43.

The decisive fourth period began with Towson taking a three-point lead following a three-pointer from Raven Bankston. The Pride tied it at 46 on a free thrown from Loftus and a jumper from White. Trailing 48-46, Hofstra took the lead once again on three free throws from Jackson. That ignited a 6-0 run for the Pride, which lead 52-48 following sophomore Durant's three-point play with 5:08 to play. Following a Towson basket, Loftus drained her first three-pointer of the game to give Hofstra a 55-50 lead. On the Pride's next possession, Loftus connected on another three-pointer for an eight-point lead and Faulk followed with a breakaway layup for a 60-50 advantage with 2:54 to play. Towson would outscore the Pride 10-4 the rest of the way but could not make up the deficit.

Bankston led Towson with 19 points. Johnson added 13 points, while Daijha Thomas pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds for the Tigers.

Hofstra returns to action Friday, January 29, when it travels to Drexel for a 7 p.m. contest.

-The win gave Hofstra a 31-30 advantage in the all-time series with Towson
