WBB: Hofstra Falls To Drexel In Close CAA Contest

Philadelphia – Hofstra junior forward Anjie White tied a season high with 16 points and added nine rebounds, but Drexel's Sarah Curran's jumper with 38.2 seconds left put the Dragons ahead for good as the Pride fell, 67-64, in a Friday night Colonial Athletic Association matchup from Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Hofstra saw its five-game winning streak come to an end as the Pride dropped to 15-4 and 6-2 in CAA play. Drexel guard Meghan Creighton scored 16 points and tallied eight rebounds to help the Dragons improve to 10-9 and 6-2. White finished one point away of tying her career high while sophomore forward Ashunae Durant contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Senior guard Darius Faulk's put-back layup gave Hofstra the 64-63 lead with 1:56 left. Faulk compiled eight points and seven assists before fouling out, though Drexel responded by forcing a turnover after Hofstra generated a defensive stop.

Curran, who scored 13 points, drove to the basket and made the shot while drawing a foul. Her missed free throw prevented her from completing the three-point play. Hofstra called timeout, but Curran stole the ball on the next possession and Drexel called timeout.

Junior guard Krystal Luciano fouled Rachel Pearson, who made her first free throw but missed the second for a 66-64 lead. Junior guard Kelly Loftus missed a three-pointer with less than nine seconds left and Drexel again got the board but could make only one of two free throws to go up by three. Luciano's long-range point attempt at the buzzer went off the rim's left side to secure the victory for the Dragons. Hofstra is now 4-3 in the last seven meetings against Drexel.

Loftus scored 12 points and Luciano ended her night with eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Senior Asia Jackson registered 10 points off the bench.

Drexel's Jackie Schluth (13 points, eight rebounds) hit a jumper to give Drexel a 46-44 lead in the third quarter, contributing to a seesaw game in which there were five lead changes and nine ties.

Schluth's head-on swish sustained a 10-0 run that put Drexel ahead, 50-44, eight minutes into the third. Faulk's steal and layup ended a stretch of eight straight missed Hofstra shots and a White lay-in helped bring Hofstra within 52-49 entering the final quarter.

Jackson drilled a left-corner three-pointer in the fourth's opening minute to tie the score at 52. Down three, Loftus completed a three-point play to again knot the score at 56 before Drexel pulled away late.

The Pride made nine consecutive shots spanning the opening two quarters, though Drexel responded with a 7-0 run that kept Hofstra off the scoreboard for more than five minutes. Durant stymied the run by scoring two straight baskets down low to rack up eight points in the opening half and put the Pride ahead, 35-33. The Pride took a halftime lead for the 15th time in 19 games this season.

A torrid-shooting opening quarter saw Hofstra make eight straight field goals to end the period, capped by Durant's block and coast-to-coast layup and three-pointers from Loftus and Jackson for a 25-20 lead. White, Jackson and Luciano each scored six points as Hofstra went 10-for-13 from the field and 5-for-7 from three-point range through the opening 10 minutes.

Hofstra will return home to host Elon Sunday at 2 p.m. The Pride fell to the Phoenix by one point at Elon on Jan. 8 but will be looking to extend its undefeated home record in the rematch. Hofstra is 8-0 at the Mack Sports Complex this season.
