MBB: Strong Second Half Lifts Hofstra Past William & Mary

Hempstead, NY - Senior guard Juan'ya Green had 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and the Pride used a strong second half rally to post a 91-63 win over William & Mary at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Sunday afternoon. Green was one of four Hofstra players in double figure scoring.

Sophomore forward Rokas Gustys continued his strong play with 18 points and 11 rebounds, his sixth consecutive game with a double-double. Senior forward Ameen Tanksley added 17 points, while graduate forward Denton Koon added 13 points. Hofstra outscored the Tribe 43-15 over the final 13:50 of the contest. 

Hofstra improves to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, remaining in a first place tie in the league standings. William & Mary fell to 13-6 on the season and 5-3 in the CAA.

The teams played a tightly-contested first half that saw Hofstra answer several William & Mary runs. William & Mary went up by seven, 12-5, following a three-pointer from Daniel Dixon with 15:22 to play. But the Pride responded with a 13-6 run to tie the score at 18 with 10:45 remaining on a three-point play from Gustys. With the score tied at 20, William & Mary used a 6-0 spurt to take a 26-20 lead with 6:50 to play. The Tribe opened up their largest lead of the half, 31-22, with 4:39 to play after Greg Malinowski knocked down a three-pointer. Hofstra responded once again with a 13-4 run and tied the score at 35 on Tanksley's three-pointer with 1:16 to play. The Pride would take their first lead since the opening minute when Koon drained a three-pointer from the right corner with 19 seconds left to put Hofstra up, 38-35. David Cohn hit a layup with 2 seconds left to send the teams into the half with Hofstra up, 38-37.

The second half started similar to the first as the Pride answered a run by the Tribe before pulling ahead midway through the stanza.  William & Mary went up by three, 46-43, on Omar Prewitt's basket with 16:17 to play before Tanksley tied the score with a three-pointer with 14:50 on the clock. After a William & Mary basket, the Pride went on an 11-0 run to take a 57-48 lead with 11:08 to play on a Gustys layup. The Pride would go up by 15 with 6:24 to play on another layup from Gustys and then took an 18-point advantage, 76-58, on Green's sixth three-pointer of the contest with 5:40 to go. A three-point play from Tanksley and a free throw from Gustys capped a 20-7 run and put the Pride ahead, 80-60, with 4:45 to play. The run extended to 22-7 on Green's free throws with 4:16 to go and the Pride's lead would grow to as much as 29 points with 26 seconds remaining after freshman Justin Wright-Foreman's three-pointer.

Cohn led William & Mary with 16 points, while Terry Tarpey added 15 and a team-high eight rebounds. Prewitt chipped in with 14 points and four assists.

In addition to his points, rebounds and assists, Green added a game-high four steals in his 34 minutes of action. The 30 points was a season-high for Green and his eight rebounds matched his season-best.  Senior forward Malik Nichols had eight rebounds off the bench for the Pride as well.

-The 30-point game was the fifth of Green's career and first at Hofstra
-The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Pride against William & Mary and improves Hofstra's record against the Tribe to 15-11
-Green's six three-pointers matched a career-high
-Hofstra's 53-point second half was a season-high against a Division I opponent (59 versus Molloy)
