Boston, MA – In a Colonial Athletic Association game for the ages, the Hofstra Men's Basketball team earned a thrilling 96-92 win over Northeastern on Thursday night at Matthews Arena.
The win keeps Hofstra in first place in the CAA as they are 5-2 in league play and 13-6 overall. Northeastern, which got 19 points from Zach Stahl and Quincy Ford, falls to 12-8 and 4-3 in league action.
Hofstra would get career performances out of a multitude of players as senior guard
Juan'ya Green had 23 points and a career-high 14 assists, sophomore center
Rokas Gustys tallied 23 points and tied his career-high with 20 rebounds and graduate forward
Denton Koon had a season-high 22 points and added 11 rebounds.
For Gustys it marked his second consecutive game with 20 rebounds.
Hofstra took a 10-point lead into the halftime break and looked to be in control as they pushed the lead to 12 early in the second stanza. The Huskies rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to send the game into the first overtime.
Koon starred in the first overtime session as he scored 11 of Hofstra's 13 points, with Green accounting for the other two. Hofstra would hold a four-point lead with 1:20 left before the Huskies got baskets from Ford and Stahl to send the game to another overtime.
It the second overtime, it was Northeastern that took the early four-point lead and Hofstra needing a rally. Senior forward
Ameen Tanksley cut the deficit to one, 84-83, before Gustys knotted the score at 87 later in the period and neither team would score in the final minute to send the game to a third overtime.
Hofstra trailed 92-91 following two free throws from T.J. Williams with 2:01 left on the clock in triple overtime. Green, the preseason CAA Player of the Year, would step up and drain a jumper to make it 93-92 in favor of the Pride with 41 ticks left on the clock. After the Pride got a defensive stop on the next Northeastern possession, junior guard
Brian Bernardi drained two huge free throws to push it to a three-point advantage with less than 10 seconds left. On the Huskies next trip down the court they would get fouled but miss the free throw and Koon would seal the incredible win with a free throw with six seconds remaining.
Tanksley added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists for Hofstra, while Bernardi added 10 points.
Hofstra held a spectacular 60-32 advantage on the boards in the game.

- The win by Hofstra ends an eight-game losing skid to Northeastern in the series. The Pride's last win in the series was a 78-75 victory in Hempstead on February 5, 2011.
- It marked Hofstra's first triple overtime game since a 92-87 victory over UNCW on January 14, 2006.
- It was Gustys' ninth double-double of the season, Green's third and Koon's third.
- Green moved into eighth place all-time at Hofstra in assists with 352. He passed Carlos Rivera, who had 351 from 2003-07.
