WBB: Hofstra Runs Away From William & Mary In 30-Point Win

Hempstead, NY - Junior guard Krystal Luciano scored a career-high 21 points and junior guard Kelly Loftus added 12 points as Hofstra defeated William & Mary, 75-45, Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra won for the third consecutive outing and improved to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. William & Mary slipped to 11-5, 2-3 in the CAA with its third straight loss.

Hofstra took advantage of strong shooting in the opening five minutes, building a 16-9 lead off of 60-percent field goal shooting. Luciano did most of the damage with nine points on 3-3 three-point shooting. The lead would grow to 15, 24-9, as Loftus capped a 10-0 run with a three-pointer. The Tribe would get within 11, 24-13, with 1:08 left in the first period. But senior guard Asia Jackson scored five straight points for the Pride and Hofstra took a 29-15 lead at the end of the opening stanza.

The second period was a low-scoring one as the teams combined for 18 points, nine apiece, as Hofstra held a 38-24 advantage at halftime. William & Mary did not get closer than 13 points in the period, while the Pride held 15-point leads on three different occasions. Luciano scored seven of the Pride's nine points in the second period. Abby Rendle had four points for the Tribe, while Alex Masaquel added three.

Hofstra was not threatened in the second half. The Pride outscored the Tribe, 25-11, in the third and built the lead to 28 points, 63-35, after 30 minutes of play. It was more of the same in the fourth period, though William & Mary did score four straight points to open the period to cut the Hofstra lead to 24. But the Pride replied with four consecutive points to put the lead back to 28. The lead would grow to as many as 32, 75-43, with just under a minute left to play on a pair of free throws from senior Jakelle King-Gilchrist.

King-Gilchrist joined Luciano and Loftus in double-figure scoring with 10 points. Junior center Sandra Dongmo came off the bench to grab a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points in a career-best 24 minutes of action. Junior forward Anjie White had eight points and eight rebounds for the Pride as well. Luciano also added seven assists and was 4-6 from three-point range.

The Pride shot 50-percent from the field for the game, compared to 28-percent for William & Mary. The game marked the second consecutive 50-percent shooting performance for the Pride, who shot 56-percent from the field in a win over UNCW this past Friday.

Rendle led William & Mary with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Masaquel chipped in with 11 points.

Hofstra will return to action Friday at Noon in a home matinee contest against Northeastern. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com or call the Hofstra Box Office at (516) HOF-TIXX.
