MBB: Gustys' 25 points, 20 Rebounds Not Enough In Overtime Loss

Hempstead, NY - Sophomore forward Rokas Gustys set career-highs with 25 points and 20 rebounds but it was not enough as James Madison outscored the Pride, 11-7, in overtime as the Dukes pulled out an 86-82 win Saturday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Hofstra tied the game in the final seconds to force overtime.
Hofstra saw its modest two-game win streak snapped and is now 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. James Madison picked up its third straight win to improve to 14-5 overall and 4-2 in the CAA.

Hofstra never led in the first half and trailed by as many as 11 before rallying to cut the deficit to two, 38-36, at halftime. The Dukes jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening minute behind five points from Jackson Kent. Hofstra would use a 9-4 run to tie the score at 11 on senior guard Juan'ya Green's two free throws with 14:24 to play. James Madison would go on a 17-6 run over the next seven minutes to build a 28-17 advantage with 7:43 to go on Shakir Brown's three-pointer. The Pride responded with a 19-8 run of their own to tie the score at 36 with 1:21 remaining. Gustys posted seven points in the spurt including the tying basket, while Green had five points. Tom Vodanovich put the Dukes back up with a jumper with 1:03 to play and neither team scored again as James Madison took the narrow two-point lead into the locker room at intermission.

Gustys recorded the double-double in the first half with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Hofstra controlled the glass in the opening stanza with a 26-16 edge.

The Pride scored the first four points of the second half and took their first lead of the game on Green's layup 1:07 into the second half. After a three-point play from Vodanovich put the Dukes up by one, the Pride scored seven of the next nine points to go up four, 47-43, with 16:45 to play on a Gustys layup. Yohanny Dalembert scored four consecutive points for JMU to knot the score at 47 with 15:12 on the clock. With the Dukes ahead by two, 49-47, the Pride used a five-point possession to take a 52-49 lead. Freshman guard Desure Buie hit a three-pointer and a JMU foul away from the ball kept possession with the Pride. Gustys put in a layup following the inbounds play for the three-point edge.

James Madison would retake the lead briefly, 55-54, on Brown's three-pointer. But junior guard Brian Bernardi put the Pride back up by two, 57-55, with a three-ball of his own on Hofstra's ensuing possession with 8:13 to play. With Hofstra leading 61-59, JMU was called for a flagrant foul. Bernardi hit both free throws and senior Ameen Tanksley hit two more on Hofstra's next possession to give the Pride a 65-59 lead.

Seven straight points by James Madison gave the Dukes a 66-65 lead with 3:12 to go, but Bernardi hit another three for a 68-66 lead. JMU went up 70-68, but Gustys tied the game at 70 with a spinning layup with 1:46 to go. Ron Curry put the Dukes ahead by two with a pair of free throws with 1:24 to play before Gustys hit one of two for the Pride to cut the deficit to 72-71 with 1:09 to play. Trailing 75-73 after Curry hit one of two free throws, graduate student Denton Koon tied the score for the Pride with a tip in following an offensive rebound. The Dukes missed a game-winner at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

In the extra session, James Madison used a 7-0 run to turn a 79-77 deficit into an 84-79 lead with 11 seconds to play. Buie's three-pointer pulled the Pride to within two with five seconds to go, but Winston Grays III hit a pair of free throws with one second left to seal the JMU win.

Green finished with 17 points and nine assists for the Pride, who placed five players in double-digit scoring. Bernardi had 12 points, while Koon and Tanksley each added 11. Koon also posted nine rebounds in the game.

Brown led four Dukes in double-figures with 22 points. Dalembert had 16 points and a team-best 16 rebounds, while Curry chipped in 14 points and Jackson Kent added 12.
