FH: Hofstra Falls To #7 Albany On First Half Goal

Hempstead, NY – The Pride defense held the seventh-ranked Great Danes to just one goal but sophomore midfielder Anna Bottino's first half goal stood up as Albany defeated Hofstra, 1-0 in a non-conference game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

Hofstra, which dropped its third consecutive contest, falls to 2-3 on the season. The Great Danes of Albany boosted their record to 3-0.

On a steamy afternoon where the mercury topped the 93 degree mark, most of the contest was played in the middle third of the field although there were several good scoring opportunities on both sides.

Albany had a 4-1 shot advantage but it was Great Dane goalie Maxi Primus who made the lone save in the first 35 minutes on a shot by Pride junior Claudia Marin Samper in the eighth minute. A little more than 11 minutes later, Bottino took a pass from junior Paula Heuser in the circle, turned and fired a shot past Pride sophomore goalie Carys Swan for a 1-0 advantage.

Hofstra came out of the intermission with some fire and had several good looks at the goal over the first 12 minutes that forced Primus to make three of his four second half saves and two defensive saves. It started in the 37th minute when senior Laura Page cleared a shot away by Pride junior Stella Schoen before Primus made a stop on Marin Samper on the rebound. The Pride junior was also stopped by Primus five minutes later and had a good goal opportunity stopped by freshman midfielder Megan Ma in the 46th minute.

Hofstra had a 10-7 shot and a 2-0 penalty corner advantage in the second half but could not get the equalizer. Both teams took 11 shots in the contest but Albany captured their eighth win over the Pride in nine meetings.

The Pride return to action on Friday, September 11 when they host the undefeated Broncs of Rider University at 4 p.m.
