Hempstead, NY – Senior captain
Charlotte Loehr and junior
Stella Schoen recorded second half goals 1:16 apart to lead the Pride of Hofstra to a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Broncs of Rider at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.
The Hofstra win snapped a three-game losing skid and evened the Pride record at 3-3 on the season. Rider suffered its first loss of the year and is now 4-1.
In a contest that statistically favored the home Pride, neither team was able to put the ball behind the goalie in the first 35 minutes despite opportunities on both side. Hofstra outshot Rider, 10-5 in the first half and two saves by Bronc goalie Joelle Prettyman and two by the visiting defense kept the Pride off the board.
That all changed in the second half for Hofstra in the 48th minute when Loehr picked up the rebound of a
Simca Schoen shot and beat Prettyman (6 saves) for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Just 1:16 later, Schoen cut off a Rider clearing attempt and beat Prettyman with a high shot to the goalie's left for a 2-0 advantage. It was Schoen's fifth goal of the year and tied her with classmate
Claudia Marin Samper for the team lead.
Hofstra sophomore goalie
Carys Swan (3 saves) was cruising along looking for her first shutout of the year and second of her career until the final 15 seconds when Rachel Ippolite deflected a pass from Allison Baligian into the goal to spoil the shutout bid. It was Ippolite's first goal of the year.
Hofstra outshot Rider 25-9 in the contest including 15-4 in the second half. The Pride also had 10 penalty corners to Rider's six.
A sidelight to the contest was the Hussong family affair as Hofstra junior captain
Colby Hussong got the second consecutive victory over the Broncs, who are coached by her mother, Lori, and her father, Dan, serves as Rider assistant coach. Colby's brother, Michael, also serves as a volunteer assistant coach for Rider.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, September 13 when the Aggies of UC Davis come to the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is noon.
