MSOC: Hofstra Ties Best Season Start In 13 Years With 2-0 Win Over St. John’s

Queens, N.Y. – Junior Harri Hawkins opened the scoring with a first-half goal and sophomore forward Meshack Eshun Addy created his own shot and buried a goal in the 46th minute to lift Hofstra to a 2-0 road win over St. John's on Sunday night at Belson Stadium.

Senior goalkeeper Patric Pray made five saves to log his third straight shutout and Hofstra extended its undefeated streak to four in racing to the program's first 4-0 start since 2002. St. John's dropped to 0-4 as the Pride won for the second time 12 career meetings against the Red Storm and post the first win in the series since 1983.

The only goal Pray has allowed this season came on a penalty kick in the season-opening win over No. 15 Syracuse. He has not allowed a goal in the last 289:30 of action. Pray's 14th career saved moved him into sole possession of third on the team's all-time list and just two behind Greg Cumpstone for second on the program's leaderboard.

Hawkins scored at St. John's for a second consecutive year to give Hofstra the lead at 27:09. Injuries forced Hofstra Head Coach Richard Nuttall to shuffle the lineup, moving Hawkins from defense to midfield. The Cambridge, England native took sophomore Mani Walcott's through-ball and blasted a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box that nestled under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead the Pride would take into halftime.

Junior midfielder Joseph Holland earned the secondary assist on the play for his team-leading 10th point. He has registered at least one point in all four games.

Eshun Addy gave Hofstra an immediate lift to start the second half when he scored just 1:15 into the period. Eshun Addy tipped the  ball to himself on the right side of the box, created space, turned and fired a shot past goalie Jordan Stagmiller for the 2-0 lead. The Red Storm netminder made two saves.

Senior defender Marius Flateboe teamed with fellow senior Daniel Grundei and junior Nino Alfonso to protect Pray in front and kept the Red Storm to just two on-target shots in the second half. The team snapped an eight-game winless streak in the series against St. John's.

Hofstra will return to action on Friday at American with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
