Orono, ME – Juniors
Stella Schoen and
Claudia Marin Samper and sophomore
Simca Schoen all scored goals for the Pride but they couldn't overcome an early four-goal run by the Terriers as 20th-ranked Boston University defeated Hofstra, 6-3 at the University of Maine Field Hockey Complex Saturday afternoon.
Hofstra slipped to 2-2 on the season while the Terriers improved to 2-1.
The Terriers, the defending Patriot League champions, came out of the gate fast with four goals in the first 30 minutes to build a commanding lead. Junior Amanda Cassera opened the scoring with her first goal of the year in the ninth minute. Classmate Bea Baumberger made it 2-0 with her second of the season in the 14th minute. Freshman Grace Boston notched her second of the season at the 26:31 mark and classmate Ally Hammel recorded the first of her two goals three minutes later to boost the lead to 4-0.
The Pride got on the board with 2:02 to play in the half as Marin Samper scored on a breakaway to cut the deficit to 4-1 at halftime. Hofstra was outshot, 14-4 in the first 35 minutes as the Terriers forced Pride sophomore goalie
Carys Swan to make eight of her career-high 11 saves in the first half.
But the three-goal gap was short-lived as Boston scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the second half including Hammel's second goal of the contest and season just 1:01 into the period and junior Hester van der Laan's second of the year nine minutes later.
Hofstra tallied the game's last two goals in the final 13 minutes as
Stella Schoen notched her fourth of the year from senior
Charlotte Loehr in the 58th minute, and
Simca Schoen tallied her third of the season following a penalty corner in the 66th minute.
The Pride was outshot in the contest, 20-9 and the Terriers had nine corners to the Pride's seven.
Hofstra returns home to the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium on Tuesday, September 8 for the start of a four-game homestand when they host the seventh-ranked Great Danes of the University at Albany at 3 p.m.
