MSOC: Second-Half Goal Keeps Hofstra Undefeated In Win Over Army West Point

West Point, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Joseph Holland scored in the 71st minute and senior goalkeeper Patric Pray made three saves for his second consecutive shutout in Hofstra's 1-0 non-conference victory over Army West Point on Friday afternoon at Clifton Field.

Holland scored his fourth goal in three games in converting sophomore Meshack Eshun Addy's crisp right-wing cross and the Pride held on to blank a team for a second straight game following a shutout versus Vermont. Hofstra improved to 3-0, which is the best start to a season since the 2002 squad began 4-0. Army West Point fell to 0-3 and is still without a goal in 2015.

Pray posted his 13th career shutout, which ties Bill Murphy (1992-95) for the third-most in program history. He now trails Greg Cumpstone's 16 for second place on the team's all-time list. The only goal the netminder from Chandler, Arizona has allowed in 270 minutes this season was a penalty kick goal against No. 15 Syracuse.

Eshun Addy registered his first career assist to break a scoreless tie at 70:34. The forward race down the right flank and crossed a pass to a streaking Holland, who came down the 18-yard box's left side and pushed a shot past goalkeeper Chris Britt.

The teams played for the first time since 1984 and Hofstra improved to 2-1-1 in the all-time series. Army West Point dropped its third straight 1-0 decision to start the campaign. Holland's four goals are just two away from tying his career high of six set during his freshman season in 2012.

Pray stopped Cody Guerry's 82nd-minute low velocity shot to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Senior Marius Flateboe headed junior Rory Murphy's left-footed cross in the 66th minute but went wide of the left post. Flateboe, Murphy, senior Daniel Grundei and junior Harri Hawkins provided strong defensive work. Holland and sophomore Jon Fraser also provided depth at midfield. Juniors Mario Ruiz and Lerthon Theuma gave Hofstra Head Coach Richard Nuttall's team a boost off the bench.

Hofstra narrowly avoided an own goal in the 23rd minute when a ricochet off a free kick caught a piece of Pray's hand and hit the cross bar.

That was the best scoring chance of the opening half as the Black Knights held a 6-2 edge in shots. The Pride allowed just two on-target shots in the half while Murphy and Joseph Holland registered the Pride's only opening-half shots.

Hofstra will stay on the local road trip by venturing to St. John's with Sunday game at 8 p.m. that will be shown on ESPN 3.
