FH: Late Rally Comes Up Short As Hofstra Falls At Maine

Orono, ME - Junior Stella Schoen recorded a goal and an assist for the Pride but Hofstra unable to rally back from a three-goal deficit as the Black Bears of Maine defeated Hofstra, 3-2 at the Maine Field Hockey Complex Friday afternoon.

Hofstra slips to 2-1 on the season while the Black Bears of Maine improve to 3-0

The Pride had a couple of early opportunities in the contest on shots by junior Stella Schoen and senior Charlotte Loehr. But Maine sophomore Emma Cochran came up with the saves.

The Black Bears got on the board first just 12:10 into the contest when senior forward Cassidy Svetek scored off a penalty corner with classmate Jessica Skillings and junior Sydney Veljacic assisting on the play. It was Svetek's first goal of the season. That was all the scoring in the half as Hofstra would outshoot the Black Bears, 4-3 in the first 35 minutes.

Maine boosted the lead to 2-0 almost seven minutes into the second half when senior Marissa Shaw beat Swan off a pass from junior Danielle Aviani. Aviana would make a Hofstra comeback more difficult with her first goal of the season, from senior Katie Bingle, at the 55:53 mark to boost the lead to 3-0.

Hofstra rallied late with two goals in the final 10 minutes. Freshman Samantha Schlegel scored her third goal of the year, off a pass from Stella Schoen, at the 60:19 mark. The Pride closed the gap to 3-2 with just 2:53 to play in the contest when Stella Schoen tallied her third of the season. But Hofstra was unable to get the equalizer to drop their first game of the season.

The Black Bears outshot Hofstra, 12-9 and took seven penalty corners to the Pride's two. Hofstra sophomore goalie Carys Swan finished with six saves while Maine split their goalkeeping duties as sophomores Emma Cochran and Emily Corbett (second half) each had two saves.

The Pride will return to action on Saturday when they face the 20th-ranked Terriers of Boston University at the University of Maine at 3 p.m.
