VB: Hofstra Rallies To Win CAA Opener At Northeastern

Boston, MA - Veronika Kostova had 16 kills and Leticia Valente added 13 kills and five blocks as Hofstra rallied from two sets down to post a 3-2 win over Northeastern in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at the Cabot Center. Set scores were 22-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-15 and 15-13.

Hofstra, the defending league champion, improved to 10-6 overall and 1-0 in CAA play. Northeastern fell to 3-13 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

The five set win was Hofstra's second in as many weeks following a 3-2 victory over Florida Gulf Coast on September 12.  The win marked the first time since 2008 that the Pride had two rallies from 0-2 down in a match (Seton Hall and Colgate). It was also the fifth five-set match of the season, which is more than in each of the last two seasons (four in both 2013 and 2014).

Northeastern won the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-19. The Huskies came out on fire offensively, hitting .417 in set one and .275 in set two.

But after the intermission between sets two and three, the Pride came to life. Hofstra raced out to a 7-1 lead, its first set lead in the match and never let the Huskies get closer than four in a 25-19 win. The Pride hit .257 in the set. Hofstra would top that with a .375 hitting percentage in set four, cruising to a 25-15 win to force the deciding set.

In the fifth set Hofstra used a 3-0 run behind a kill from Nanishka Perez and a service ace from Brianna Montgomery to take a 5-2 lead. The Huskies would keep it close and pulled to within one at 14-13 after two consecutive points. But Valente would record the final kill of the match off an over pass and give the Pride the win.

The Pride returns home to face CAA foe William & Mary Friday night at 7 p.m.
