VB: Hofstra Wins CAA Clash With Straight-Set Win Over Tribe

Hempstead, N.Y. – Freshman outside hitter Nanishka Perez posted a game-high 14 kills and junior setter Hannah Klemm notched 47 assists to keep Hofstra undefeated in Colonial Athletic Association play with a straight-set victory over William & Mary on Friday night at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Hofstra won for the third time in the last four matches to improve to 11-6 and defeated a league foe for the second time in three days after upending Northeastern, 3-2, on Wednesday. The Pride won the season's first two conference games for a second straight season. Set scores were 25-17, 25-22 and 25-18.

William & Mary's Gabrielle Pe paced the Tribe with 14 assists and Dessi Koleva added eight kills, but the Tribe dropped to 6-9 overall and lost its CAA opener.

Hofstra won seven points to start the opening set. The Pride hit .364 in the set with sophomore Leticia Valente hitting .583 and recording seven kills to drive the action. Klemm added 19 assists in the opening set and 14 in the second half, helping her move into sole possession of fifth-place on the program's all-time list and surpass Brie Katz (1999-02), who compiled 2,726 in her career. Klemm's assist total stands at 2,753 and Ines Portuondo is next up in the fourth spot at 2,871.

Klemm recorded 16 more assists than the entire William & Mary output of 31. Valente chipped in 11 kills, matching junior outside hitter Veronika Kostova's effort. Freshman outside hitter Luisa Domingues registered a season-high 25 digs, besting her previous high of 19 set most recently against Notre Dame.

Hofstra led wire-to-wire in the opening set, though the Tribe came back in the second to force nine ties and five lead changes. Mallory Brickerd's ace put the Tribe ahead, 11-9, before Hofstra responded with three straight points. An attack error knotted the score at 12, though Hofstra capitalized on a service error on the next point and never trailed again to go into the break holding a two-set edge.

Hofstra won its 53rd straight game when capturing the first two sets. Sophomore Brianna Montgomery, who had nine kills in the match, put the Pride ahead, 11-6, on senior Corrina Delgadillo's set. The Tribe would get as close as moving with 17-16 before the Pride generated a cushion with back-to-back points.

The Pride scored six of the match's last seven points. Perez and Valente ended rallies on the last two points to secure the win and help Hofstra improve to 20-18 in the all-time series.

The Pride will next be in action to cap a two-game homestand on Sunday versus Elon with a 1 p.m. match to continue CAA play.
