VB: Delgadillo Reaches 1,000 Career Digs In Hofstra Loss To Wake Forest

Winston-Salem, NC – Senior defensive specialist Corrina Delgadillo reached the 1,000 career digs plateau in the match but the Hofstra Volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-set decision to Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at the Deacon Classic.

Delgadillo, who had 12 digs in the match, now has 1,001 career digs for the Pride during her stellar career that has seen her be part of two Colonial Athletic Association Championships and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Demon Deacons rallied for the win as set scores were 18-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22 and 15-10. It was Hofstra's fourth five-set match already this season.

Hofstra is now 9-6 this season, while Wake Forest is 8-3.

Hofstra was led offensively by sophomore middle blocker Leticia Valente with a career-high tying 17 kills for the second straight match. Sophomore right side Brianna Montgomery had the best match of her career as she posted a career-best 14 kills, along with a career-high tying five blocks and four digs. Freshman outside hitter Nanishka Perez had the second double-double of her career with 11 kills and 12 digs.

A tight contest that featured a total of 21 tie scores and 12 lead changes throughout the five sets saw Hofstra jump out to a two sets to one lead in the contest. Wake Forest would need a rally in the fourth set to send it to a decisive fifth stanza and the Demon Deacons scored five straight points trailing 20-15 to even the score at 20 late in the fourth set. The set was tied at 22 before Wake Forest scored the set's final three points.

Wake Forest jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the final set before Hofstra eventually knotted the score at five on a kill from junior outside hitter Veronika Kostova. With the score even at six moments later, the home team scored three straight points to take a commanding 9-6 advantage and they would never relinquished the lead the rest of the way in posting the narrow victory.

Junior setter Hannah Klemm posted 53 assists and seven digs for the Pride in the match.

Kylie Long led Wake Forest with 19 kills, while Caroline Wolf had 26 digs for the Demon Deacons.

Hofstra returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Northeastern to open Colonial Athletic Association play. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

NOTES
- Today marked the first-ever meeting between Hofstra and Wake Forest.
- Montgomery's previous career-high of eight kills came against Florida Gulf Coast last week.
- Valente has tallied her career-high of 17 kills on three separate occasions this season with the matches against Duquesne and Georgia being the others.
- The four five-set matches that Hofstra has already played this season equals the entire total in each of the last two seasons as the Pride played four five-set contests in 2013 and 2014.
