Hempstead, NY - Junior
Stella Schoen scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the second half, and freshman
Madison Sauve posted her first collegiate goal to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 3-2 non-conference victory over the UMass Lowell River Hawks at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.
Hofstra, which won its third consecutive game, improved to 5-3 on the season. The River Hawks slipped to 5-2 on the year.
Schoen opened the scoring in the contest with just 1:45 to play in the first half, collecting a pass from classmate
Claudia Marin Samper and firing a low shot into the right corner past River Hawks sophomore goalie Kelsey Federico (six saves) for a 1-0 lead. It was her sixth goal of the season.
The River Hawks tied the game just 1:38 into the second half as freshman Torrie Huk picked up a blocked shot and put it into the goal to knot the score at 1-1. It was Huk's fourth goal of the year.
But five minutes later, the Pride answered with consecutive goals less than three minutes apart to open up a 3-1 advantage. In the 42nd minute,
Simca Schoen, Stella's younger sister, sent a long pass into the circle that hopped over two sticks and came to Stella near the crease. The older Schoen deflected it into the goal for her seventh of the year and a 2-1 lead.
In the 45th minute, senior co-captain
Charlotte Loehr sent a pass across the circle to Sauve on the right side of the goal. The newcomer wasted little time and slapped it home for her first collegiate goal and a 3-1 lead.
UMass Lowell closed the deficit to 3-1 with 11:36 to play when Huk struck for her fifth goal of the season, off a pass across the goal mouth by senior Jenna Freitas. But the River Hawks were stymied the rest of the way as the Pride boosted their series record over the River Hawks to 5-0-1.
Hofstra outshot UMass Lowell, 25-9 and took seven penalty corners to the River Hawks' two. Sophomore goalie
Carys Swan needed to make only one save on the day for her fourth victory of the season. Hofstra junior
Leigh Maxwell-Smith was a standout on defense for the Pride and recorded two defensive saves.
Hofstra, which concluded its current four-game homestand with a 3-1 record, returns to action on Wednesday, September 23 when they travel to Fairfield University for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
