BB: Big Innings Lift James Madison Past Hofstra

Harrisonburg, VA - James Madison used a pair of big innings to post a 10-7 win Friday evening at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park. The Dukes scored six runs in the second inning and four runs in the fifth to account for their scoring.

Hofstra, which had a five-run third inning, fell to 18-28 overall and 5-17 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Dukes upped their record to 17-28 overall and 5-14 in league play.

James Madison chased Pride starter Bowie Matteson with a five-run second. The Dukes loaded the bases with one out before Josh Wyatt drove in two runs with a single. Michael Sciorra followed with an RBI single before Kevin Hussum knocked in a run with a double. Ky Parrott had an RBI groundout and Chad Carroll closed out the scoring with a run scoring single.

The Pride battled back with five runs in the top of the third, chasing Dukes starter Aaron Hoover in the process. Jake Fallon led off with a single and moved to second on a single from Chris Hardardt. Mat Annunziata drove in Fallon with a single of his own and Brad Witkowski delivered Hardardt with a single to make it a 6-2 game. Steven Foster doubled to drive in Annunziata and Dalton Rouleau knocked in Witkowski with a single. Mark Gunst replaced Hoover and retired his first batter before Brett Johnson drove in the Pride's fifth run with a sacrifice fly.

The Dukes pulled away in the fifth with four runs off Chris Bonk. The Dukes Brett  Johnson drove in two runs in the inning, while Kyle Weston and Bobby San Martin also had RBIs.

The Pride tried one last comeback attempt in the eighth as Fallon and Hardardt reached base to open the inning and Annunziata drove in Fallon with a double. Foster added a sacrifice fly, but that was all the runs the Pride would score.

Matteson (2-3) took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. Annunziata, Witkowski, Rouleau, Fallon and Hardardt all had two hits for the Pride. Foster and Annunziata each drove in runs.

Gunst (3-3) picked up the win after allowing one hit in three scoreless frames. Eric Yankey earned his second save with four innings of relief, allowing four hits and two runs with six strikeouts. Carroll led the Dukes with three hits, while Johnson and Wyatt both had two RBIs.

The series continues Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.
