BB: Hofstra Rally Falls Short In Loss To Elon

Hempstead, NY – Hofstra rallied from an 11-0 deficit and brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Elon held on from a 12-10 victory to avoid the series sweep Sunday afternoon at University Field.

Hofstra fell to 18-27 overall with the loss and is 5-16 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Elon evened its mark at 23-23 and is 12-9 in league play.

Things did not start out well for the Pride as they fell behind, 7-0, after three innings. The Phoenix hit four home runs in the first three innings off of Hofstra starter Nick Kozlowski, two solo shots from Nick Zammarelli and two run homers by Casey Jones and Ryan Cooper.  Elon would take an 11-0 lead in the fifth, scoring four times on three RBI singles and a sacrifice fly.

Hofstra put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI ground out by Chris Hardardt and a solo home run from Mat Annunziata. Eric Ferguson had an RBI single to drive in Brett Johnson in the sixth to make it an 11-3 game. After a scoreless seventh, the Pride posted three runs in the eighth. Brian MacDonald doubled and came in on a two-run home run from Johnson, while Hardardt drove in Ferguson with a single.

Elon would add an insurance run in the ninth without a hit as reliever Adam Seibert walked the bases full and then gave up a sacrifice fly to Austin Leeney.

The Pride would not go quietly in the ninth against Elon closer Joe McGillicuddy. The Pride scored a run on a passed ball and then loaded the bases with two outs. Hardardt hit a fly ball to center that would have been the last out of the game, but was dropped for a two-base error that allowed all three runs to score to make it a 12-10 game. But Jake Stalzer came on to retire his only batter and record his first save.

Lucas Bakker evened his record at 5-5 for the Phoenix, allowing five runs on 12 hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings. Cooper (three) and Zammarelli (two) combined for five of Elon's 10 hits on the day.

Kozlowski fell to 1-6 on the year after allowing seven runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings. Johnson went 4-5 with two doubles, a single and a home run for the Pride. Annunziata, Steven Foster, MacDonald and Hardardt each had two hits in Hofstra's 14-hit day.

The game marked the final home appearance for Dalton Rouleau, Luke Noone, Kevin Weissheier, Brendan Mulligan, Johnson, MacDonald, Kozlowski and Ferguson.

Hofstra is idle until Friday, when it opens a three-game series at James Madison. First pitch in Harrisonburg, Virginia, is set for 6:30 p.m.
