BB: Hofstra Clinches Series Win With 10-6 Win Over Elon

Hempstead, NY - Brad Witkowski and Jake Fallon each had three hits, three runs scored and an RBI, and Brian MacDonald knocked in four runs as Hofstra defeated Elon, 10-6, Saturday afternoon. The win clinched the CAA series for the Pride ahead of Sunday's 1 p.m. finale.

Hofstra, which has won three consecutive games, improved to 18-26 on the season and 5-15 in the CAA. Elon dropped below .500 at 22-23 overall and 11-9 in league action.

The Pride scored four times in the third inning, loading the bases with no out before Fallon delivered an RBI single. Dalton Rouleau followed with a two-run double down the left field line to make it a 3-0 game. MacDonald then knocked in his first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to give Hofstra a four-run cushion.

Elon battled back with three runs in the fourth inning, two on a Kory Shumate double, and a run in the fifth on Ryan Cooper's sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4-4. But Hofstra responded with a two-run fifth inning to take the lead for good at 6-4. MacDonald had an RBI groundout and Fallon would score on an errant throw.

Chris King would pull the Phoenix within one, 6-5, with a leadoff home run in the sixth, but the Pride pulled away in the seventh with three runs, the first on Brad Witkowski's first career home run and two on a single from MacDonald that scored both Rouleau and Fallon. The Pride would close out their scoring in the eighth as Eric Ferguson homered down the left field line to make it a 10-5 game. Casey Jones connected on his third home run of the season to lead off the ninth, but that was all the runs the Phoenix would manage.

Alec Eisenberg went five innings for the Pride, allowing three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts to earn the win and even his record at 4-4. Kevin Weissheier went one-third of an inning and Chris Weiss closed out the final 3 2/3 to earn his fourth save. The freshman allowed two hits and one run and struck out five, including the side in the eighth.

Matt Harris (5-3) allowed eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits in six innings and was saddled with the loss. Jones, King and Cooper each had two hits for Elon.

In addition to the multi-hit performances of Witkowski and Fallon, Rouleau added two doubles and Ferguson collected a single in addition to his home run.

The series concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday with senior day festivities beginning at 12:40 p.m. Hofstra will honor eight graduating seniors – Rouleau, MacDonald, Ferguson, Weissheier, Nick Kozlowski, Brendan Mulligan, Brett Johnson and Luke Noone – as they play their final home game at University Field.
