BB: Hofstra Defeats Elon In Series Opener

Hempstead, NY - Brett Johnson went 3-4 with an RBI and Jake Fallon added a two-run double to back the combined pitching efforts of Bowie Matteson and Brendan Mulligan in a 5-3 win over Elon Friday at University Field.

The win snapped a 7-game conference losing streak for the Pride and lifted their record to 17-26 overall, 4-15 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Elon slipped to 22-22 overall and 11-8 in conference play with its third consecutive loss.

The Pride opened the scoring in the second as Dalton Rouleau led off with a walk and went to second on a ground out. Johnson singled through the right side to send Rouleau home and give the Pride a 1-0 advantage.

The Phoenix tied it in the third as Quinn Bowers reached on an infield single, moved to second on an out and came home on a single up the middle from Kory Shumate.

David Leiderman put the Pride ahead to stay in the fourth as he drove in Johnson, who had doubled, with a double of his own. Hofstra broke the game open in the fifth with three runs. Fallon had a two-run double down the right field line and then scored on Rouleau's two-bagger to center.

Matteson (2-2) gave up a two-run home run to Chris King in the seventh before giving way to Mulligan with two outs in the inning. The red-shirt junior got out of the inning and closed out the rest of the game for his second save. Matteson allowed the three runs on seven hits and struck out four to get the win.

Elon starter Nick Beaulac (4-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. Sean Byrnes finished the game for the Phoenix and allowed one hit.

Chris Hardardt had two hits for the Pride, which won for the first time in conference play since a 5-4 win over Towson on April 11.

The teams continue the series Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.
