BB: Bonk Shines In 12-9 Win Over LIU Post

Hempstead, NY – Chris Bonk struck out a career-best nine batters in seven innings and Hofstra withstood a late-inning LIU Post rally as the snapped a four-game losing skid with a 12-9 victory over the Pioneers Wednesday at University Field.

Hofstra improved to 16-26 on the season with the win over LIU Post in the first meeting between the two schools since the 1994 season. LIU Post, which competes at the Division II level, is 17-16 on the year.

Bonk and Pioneers starter Jake DeCarli matched zeroes over the first three innings. Hofstra did not manage a hit off the LIU Post ace, who left the game after pitching three innings as part of a planned rotation. Bonk surrendered three singles over the first three frames.

Hofstra broke through in the fourth inning off reliever James Long, scoring four times. Brad Witkowski led off with a single up the middle and went to second after Jake Fallon walked. Dalton Rouleau dropped a single into right field that scored Witkowski and sent Fallon to third. Both runners came in as Brian MacDonald hit a towering home run to left field for a 4-0 Pride lead.

The Pride added three more runs in the fifth inning off of Connor McCarthy. Fallon had a two-run single and then came around to score later in the inning on an error after stealing third base.

The Pioneers would get on the board in the sixth as Kenny Daley led off with a home run to right center. But that was the only run Bonk would allow. The junior left after the seventh inning, allowing the one run on six hits and no walks to improve to 3-5 on the season.

Hofstra would score a run in the sixth on Louis Carrafiello's RBI double and then add three more in the seventh to take an 11-1 lead. But LIU Post scored four times in the eighth inning, sending nine men to the plate to pull within 11-5.

Mat Annunziata led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run down the right field line to put the Pride back up by seven, 12-5, but the Pioneers scored four more runs off the Pride bullpen in the ninth to get to within three, 12-9. Daley had a two-run triple in the inning, while Anthony Brunetti homered. The Pioneers had the tying run at the plate, but he was retired on a fly out to center to end the game.

Long (1-6) took the loss for LIU Post, allowing four runs on four hits in one inning of work. Daley, Brunetti and Rich Maccarone each had three hits for the Pioneers, while Daley (3) and Vinny Iacono (2) had multi-RBI games.

Annunziata, Witkowski and Chris Weiss had two hits each for the Pride. MacDonald drove in three runs and Fallon added two RBIs.

Hofstra is back in action Friday when it opens its final home stand of the year against Elon. First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m.
