BB: Hofstra Drops 5-2 Decision At Monmouth

West Long Branch, NJ - Monmouth used a two-run third inning to snap a 1-1 tie and went on to a 5-2 win over Hofstra Tuesday afternoon at MU Baseball Field. Jake Fallon had two hits for the Pride.

Monmouth improved to 15-19 on the year, while Hofstra fell to 15-26 with its fourth consecutive loss.

The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as David Leiderman drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a single by Brett Johnson. Brian MacDonald then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Leiderman.

The Hawks got the run right back in the bottom of the inning as Dan Shea led off with a home run to centerfield. Monmouth then took the lead for good in the third as Grant Lumberton led off with a single and stole second before coming around on a two-out single from Kyle Perry. Hofstra starter Adam Heidenfelder then walked the next three hitters to force in the second run before yielding to reliever Brendan Mulligan. The red-shirt junior escaped the bases-loaded jam with a strikeout to end the inning.

Hofstra loaded the bases in the fourth inning with one out on two walks and a single, but came away with just one run as Mat Annunziata reached on an error that plated MacDonald.

Monmouth added insurance runs in the fifth and eighth innings to win for the third straight game. Matt Littrell picked up the win in relief, allowing one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Justin Andrews earned his third save with 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief.
