SB: Hofstra Blanks Delaware For Third Straight Time

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra seniors Morgan Lashley, Taylor Pirone and Erin Trippi all came through in their final career home games to lift Hofstra to a 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Delaware Sunday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.

Lashley struck out five and allowed just two hits in 4 1/3 innings to win her 18th consecutive start. Hofstra clinched the second spot in the CAA Tournament in improving to 30-11-1 and 14-3 in league play. Pirone and Lashley shut out the Blue Hens in all three games of the series sweep in holding Delaware to just seven combined hits in 18 innings over the weekend. The Blue Hens fell to 27-21 and 5-12 against the conference.

Pirone surrendered just one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief. She posted two strikeouts and did not walk a batter to earn her fourth save, allowing Lashley to improve to 18-1. The two veteran right-handers have combined for 13 Hofstra shutouts this season.

Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the first without recording a hit. The Pride waited out Delaware's Carolyn Szymanski (16-12), who walked juniors Caryn Bailey and Kim Smith before getting a ground out. Another walk to freshman Brielle Pietrafesa brought up Trippi with the bases loaded.

Trippi, the only four-year member of Hofstra in the starting lineup, capped an emotional day by driving in a run on a hit-by-pitch to score Bailey for the opening tally. Trippi, who has caught every pitch behind the plate since the 2013 campaign, registered her 16th RBI, which proved to be the game-winner.

The Pride left the  bases loaded in both the first and second innings, and Szymanski did not allow a hit until Clark's fifth-inning single despite the Blue Hens trailing for most of the game. Clark's one-out hit preceded Pietrafesa's single to right, and the pair scored later in the inning as Trippi reached on a throwing error and freshman Brittany Allocca's RBI ground out brought Pietrafesa home for the three-run edge.

Hofstra ended the home portion of the schedule 15-4 at Bill Edwards Stadium, which was renamed last week in honor of the team's retied former head coach.

James Madison clinched first place in the CAA by completing a sweep over Elon to improve to 17-0. The Dukes hold the tiebreaker over Hofstra with each team having three CAA games remaining. At 8-10, neither Elon nor Towson can catch Hofstra in the standings.

The Pride will end the regular season with the non-conference finale Tuesday at Seton Hall before playing the College of Charleston three times on the road. Nationally ranked JMU will host the CAA Tournament from May 6-8.
