SB: Patierno And Pirone Lead Hofstra To 13-Inning Win Over Seton Hall

South Orange, N.J. – Freshman designated player Megan Patierno belted a game-tying two-run home run in the seventh and came through with the go-ahead single in the 13th to send Hofstra to a 6-3 win over Seton Hall in the Pride's longest game in 15 years Tuesday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field.

Senior pitcher Taylor Pirone threw 11 1/3 innings in relief while giving up just one run to help Hofstra extend its winning streak to six in improving to 31-11-1. Pirone allowed just one run as Big East-member Seton Hall fell to 22-26.

Hofstra played the most innings since the 2000 squad won a 20-inning game over Delaware in the America East Tournament. Hofstra's final regular season non-conference game saw Patierno go 3-for-6 with three RBIs.

Seton Hall's Danielle DeStaso hit a two-run home run in the second and Casey Moses allowed one run in six innings, which put the Pirates two outs away from victory in the seventh before Patierno's game-tying blast that sent the game to extra innings.

Pirone and Lauren Fischer exchanged zeros for five innings from the eighth to the 12th inning before the Pride broke through in the 13th. Junior Kim Smith and Lacey Clark started the inning with back-to-back singles. Fischer rebounded to get the next two outs before Patierno's clutch two-out single to left scored Smith and catcher Alex Rabbetts muffed the throw home for an error that allowed Clark to score the second run. Freshman Brittany Allocca's RBI single to right scored Patierno for the insurance run and a three-run advantage.

Pirone improved to 13-10 in striking out two and allowing just one walk despite the high inning total. Fischer took the loss in dropping to 9-10.

Danielle DeStaso's high-arching two-run home run to left opened the scoring in the second off senior starter Morgan Lashley. Sara Haefeli doubled to left-center and DeStatso pulled her 11th home run into the trees in left-center for a 2-0 edge. Following a two-out walk, Pirone entered in relief and helped the Pride exit the inning without another run.

The Pirates extended the lead to 3-0 in the third when Yasmin Harrell hit a leadoff single off Pirone and scored on Alexis Walkden's RBI single through the left side. That gave Seton Hall an edge that Hofstra threatened when junior outfielder Caryn Bailey's solo home run ignited the Pride's comeback.

Bailey hit an opposite-field home run to left in the sixth off starter Casey Moses. Her career-high 12th home run this year was her 28th career long ball, which put her in sole possession of fifth place on Hofstra's all-time list. Bailey needs just one more to tie Becca Bigler and Tara Ulrich for the third-most in program history.

Hofstra's seventh-inning rally started when senior catcher Erin Trippi delivered a leadoff single-up-the-middle to chase Moses in favor of Fischer. In bidding for her first save this season, Fischer induced a force out before Patierno pulled her offering over the SHUSoftball sign in left for the tying shot.

Patierno's seventh home run erased Seton Hall's lead and kept alive Lashley's streak of 18 consecutive winning decisions. Lashley took the no-decision and still has not been charged with a loss since Feb. 13.

Seton Hall threatened in the seventh when Whitney Jones and Walkden each hit leadoff singles. A sacrifice bunt put the potential winning run on third base with one out, but Pirone escaped trouble when DeStatso hit a comebacker and Pirone fired to third base to get the lead runner heading back to third. A ground out ended the threat and sent the game to extra innings for the fifth time this season.

Pirone again escaped a jam by stranding two runners in the ninth. Walkden and Haefeli, who combined to go 6-for-11, singled in the ninth before Pirone forced two straight fly outs, including Rabbetts' drive to left that junior Chloe Fitzgerald grabbed in front of the wall to send the game to the 10th.

The Pride sent nine batters to the plate in the 13th and notched 15 hits for the game. Sophomore shortstop Michaela Transue went 3-for-6.

Hofstra will conclude the regular season with a three-game road Colonial Athletic Association series at the College of Charleston, starting with Friday's 4 p.m. doubleheader.
