SB: Hofstra Twice Blanks Delaware In Doubleheader Sweep

Hempstead, N.Y. – Senior pitchers Morgan Lashley and Taylor Pirone threw back-to-back shutouts and sophomore Lacey Clark drove in a pair of runs in each game as Hofstra swept Delaware in a doubleheader, 8-0 and 8-0, Saturday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.

Lashley threw a one-hitter as the Pride won the first game in five innings and Pirone allowed just three hits in the second game, which Hofstra ended in six innings on the run rule.

Freshman Brittany Allocca hit a two-run home run in the second game and junior Kim Smith hit a two-run shot in the first inning of the opener. Hofstra built a cushion for second place in the Colonial Athletic Association by improving to 13-3 in CAA play and improved 29-11-1 overall. Delaware fell to 27-20 and 5-11 in league action.

Lashley won her 17th consecutive decision in holding Delaware to just a first-inning single in the opener. She struck out five and needed just 73 pitches in five innings to improve to 17-1. The right-hander only allowed one mini rally when Delaware loaded the bases in the fifth with the Pride ahead, 2-0. The Davidson, North Carolina native induced a fly out to strand three, including the go-ahead run on first base.

The Pride responded by scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game by the run rule. Senior catcher Erin Trippi walked twice in the inning and her second base-on-balls forced in a run with the bases loaded. Delaware's Carolyn Szymanski (16-11) saw the game end on a passed ball to score Clark for the eight-run differential. Clark and sophomore Michaela Transue each hit two-run singles to ignite the barrage.

Smith's fifth home run staked Lashley to a 2-0 lead in the first. The third baseman pulled a two-run shot left and scored twice in the game overall.

Hofstra jumped on Delaware starter Kiersten Coffman for a three-run second inning in the second game. That would be all Pirone (12-10) would need. After Lashley recorded her eighth shutout of the season in the first game, Pirone notched her fourth (and the team's 12th combined) by needing just 60 pitches to get through six innings.

Allocca hit her fourth home, taking Coffman (3-3) deep to left for a two-run shot. Junior outfielder Caryn Bailey's RBI double made the lead 3-0, which held until the fifth when the Pride scored four insurance runs in sending 10 batters to the plate. Smith, Clark, Trippi and Transue all drove in a run in the inning and Clark ended the game in the sixth with a RBI double to center off reliever Kelly Lupton to facility the run-rule.

Hofstra has won 26 consecutive games against Delaware and has not lost at home to the Blue Hens since the finale of the 2004 series in a 10-inning defeat.

The Pride will close the three-game series Sunday at noon. There will be a pregame Senior Day ceremony for Trippi, Lashley and Pirone before the game.
