BB: Hofstra Falls To Northeastern In Series Opener

Brookline, MA - Nick Berger allowed one unearned run on two hits over 5 1/3 innings and Mike Fitzgerald pitched the final 3 2/3 innings without allowing a hit as Northeastern posted a 5-1 win over Hofstra Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.

Hofstra fell to 15-23 on the season, 3-13 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the loss. Northeastern is now 18-22 overall and 8-5 in league play.

Each team recorded a sacrifice fly to get on the scoreboard. The Huskies went up 1-0 in the third as Keith Kelly drove in Michael Foster with a sac fly. The Pride responded in the top of the fourth as Brad Witkowski walked, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on David Leiderman's sacrifice fly.

Northeastern broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Foster had an RBI double and Kelly added a two-run single. Foster added a RBI double in the sixth to close out the scoring.

Berger improved to 5-3 on the season, while Fitzgerald notched his fourth save.

Bowie Matteson (1-2) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing five runs on seven hits in seven innings. Mat Annunziatahad both of the Pride's hits.

The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m.
