SB: Hofstra Wins Rain-Shortened Game Versus Fordham

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra struck for five runs in the third inning and senior pitcher Morgan Lashley limited Fordham to just four hits in a complete game as the Pride defeated Fordham, 7-1, in a rain-shortened non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.

Lashley won her 16th consecutive decision in striking out four against just one walk. After setting down the Rams 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth, the game was delayed due to lightning in the area and ended less than a half hour later due to heavy rain in the area. The game was official at that point, as the Pride improved to 27-11-1 while Fordham dropped to 25-18.

Sophomore Michaela Transue helped sustain the Pride's rally in the third in which the first four batters reached and scored. Transue's two-run double extended the Pride's lead to 6-1 and saddled Fordham starter Michele Daubman (6-8) with the loss.

Junior third baseman Kim Smith and junior outfielder Caryn Bailey both scored twice.

Fordham opened the scoring on Rachel Gillen's RBI infield single in the first that plated Morgan Figueroa. Hofstra knotted the scoring in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on the first of three Fordham errors in the game when Rams' shortstop Brianna Turgeon's two-out throwing error allowed Bailey to score.

Bailey, Smith, sophomore Lacey Clark and freshman Brielle Pietrafesa all reached to start the third, igniting an inning in which the Pride registered five hits and sent 10 batters to the plate. Clark's RBI hit scored Bailey and Fordham's third error of the game allowed Smith to come home. Freshman Megan Patierno's RBI single drove in a run before Transue doubled to center to plate two more.

Freshman Brittany Allocca drove in Smith with a single in the fourth to provide the cushion. Lashley made the lead stand up in improving to 16-1. She threw 51 of her 78 total pitches for strikes. She retired the last eight batters in a row.

Hofstra will conclude the home portion of the schedule with a three-game Colonial Athletic Association weekend series versus Delaware. A Saturday doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. and conclude on Sunday in a noon finale. Ceremonies to honor seniors Lashley, Taylor Pirone and Erin Trippi will also take place before Sunday's game.
