Hempstead, NY – Junior outfielder
Caryn Bailey drilled a two-run homer in the seventh and smashed the walk-off two-run shot in the eighth as part of a five-RBI effort in Hofstra's come-from-behind 6-4 victory over Syracuse in a non-conference matchup at Bill Edwards Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
Bailey helped Hofstra erase a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh and her two-run shot off Syracuse's Jocelyn Carter in the eighth helped the Pride improve to 26-11-1. Syracuse's Rachel Burkhardt drove in two runs, but the Orange fell to 17-26.
Senior pitcher
Morgan Lashley won her 15th consecutive decision and improved to 15-1 by throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starting senior
Taylor Pirone. Lashley recorded six of her seven outs via strikeouts. Pirone threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and seven hits and striking out three.
After four scoreless innings by Syracuse's Cater (12-17) and Hofstra's Pirone, the Orange struck first in the fifth on a two-out, line drive homer to left by leftfielder Annie Toczynski for a 1-0 Syracuse lead.
But Bailey tied the game for Hofstra in the bottom half of the inning with a RBI ground out that plated pinch-runner
Rachel Simodejka and knotted the score at 1.
Syracuse came right back in the sixth and scored three times as senior Julie Wambold had an RBI single up the middle and freshman Rachel Burkhardt had a two-run single down the right field line that scored sophomore Sydney O'Hara, who singled, and Wambold for a 4-1 lead.
After Hofstra went quietly in the sixth and the Orange in the top of the seventh, the Pride launched their dramatic rally in the bottom of the seventh. Shortstop
Michaela Transue led off with a walk but was erased at second on a fielder's choice by leftfielder
Chloe Fitzgerald. Bailey then came to the plate and drilled her 10th homer of the season down the right field line to bring the Pride to within one at 4-3.
Third baseman
Kim Smith then singled, and
Lacey Clark and
Brielle Pietrafesa each walked to load the bases. After a pop out by
Megan Patierno,
Brittany Allocca walked to score Smith and tie the game at 4-4.
Erin Trippi struck out to end the frame and send the contest into extra innings.
In the eighth, the Orange had their leadoff batter Corinne Ozanne reach base after getting hit by Lashley. But the Pride pitcher struck out two of the next three batters to close out the inning.
In the Hofstra half of the eighth, Transue led off and popped out to second. Fitzgerald then singled past shortstop. Bailey then smacked her 11th homer of the season and the second of the game, to left field for the game-winner. It was also Bailey's 27th career home run, tying her with Lisa Wambold (2003-06) for fifth-most in program history.
Hofstra will return to action at home on Wednesday (April 22) when the Fordham Rams come to Bill Edwards Stadium for a 3 p.m. match-up. Live audio will be available via Pride Productions as well as free live statistics.
