BB: Hofstra Powers Past NJIT

Newark, N.J. – Hofstra scored five fifth-inning runs and Brian MacDonald went 3-for-5 with four RBIs to lead the Pride past NJIT, 13-7, Tuesday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Steven Foster served as the offensive catalyst from the second spot in going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs while adding a walk to reach safely in all four plate appearances. Hofstra snapped a three-game losing streak in improving to 14-22 while NJIT fell to 17-14-1.

Dalton Rouleau also scored three runs. The shortstop joined Foster, Brad Witkowski, Mat Annunziata and Chris Weiss as the five Pride players to cross the plate multiple times. Kevin Weissheier and Matt Weissheier combined for three hitless innings in relief to close out the victory.

Hofstra tagged NJIT starter James Sofield for three runs in the first and second innings, chasing him after 1 2/3 innings. Sofield gave up a three-run home run to Foster (0-2) in the second after the Highlanders had cut the Pride's lead to 3-2 entering the top of the second.

Junior right-hander Chris Bonk (3-5) earned the win for Hofstra. Both teams used predetermined limits on pitchers for the midweek non-conference game, allowing Bonk to get the win after he logged four innings. Bonk made his first appearance in nine days and his four-inning outing was his longest since March 27.

Both squads utilized five pitchers. Kevin Weissheier pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and brother Matt, a freshman retired the side in order in the ninth in the non-save situation.

Hofstra provided the pitching staff with a cushion in the fifth. The Pride pounded six hits in the inning. Annunziata added an RBI double and Weiss capped the scoring with his two-run homer. The first of Hofstra's two runs in the sixth inning scored on a double play and a MacDonald RBI single.

Hofstra will play another non-league game Wednesday versus LIU Brooklyn at 3:30 p.m. from University Field.
