SB: Hofstra Falls To Elon In CAA Series Finale

Hempstead, N.Y. – Elon scored three runs in the top of the seventh to break a tie as Hofstra fell to the Phoenix, 5-2, in the finale of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series Sunday afternoon.

Before the game, Hofstra announced a renaming of the facility to Bill Edwards Stadium in recognition of his 25-year tenure with the program. Senior catcher Erin Trippi, who played her first three seasons under Edwards, hit an opposite-field home run in the sixth to tie the game at 2 before Elon's rally.

Hofstra fell to 25-11-1 and 11-3 in CAA play. The Pride had swept the Phoenix in Saturday's doubleheader to win the series in taking two-of-three. Elon salvaged the final game to improve to 26-15 and 8-7 in league action.

Three straight one-out singles put Elon ahead in the seventh. Shortstop Hannah Olson, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, singled and advanced to scoring position on Alaina Hall's single.

Emily Shutt followed by lining the second of her two hits to right. Her RBI single drove in Olson for the go-ahead run. Emily Roper and Carey Million also added run-scoring singles to left to extend Elon's lead to 5-2.

Junior Caryn Bailey worked a leadoff walk in the seventh, prompting Elon to bring in Kiandra Mitchum in relief of Kayla Caruso. Mitchum induced a fly out and a double play off a line out to register her second save.

Caruso improved to 9-4 by pitching four innings in relief of Chelsea White. Yet, down 2-1, Hofstra tied the score in the eighth when Trippi smashed Caurso's into the bushes in right for her second home run this season. The one-out hit knotted the score.

While senior pitcher Taylor Pirone took the loss in falling to 11-10, the right-hander's 6 2/3 innings of relief work gave the Pride a chance to come back. Elon scored two first-inning runs off Hofstra senior starter Morgan Lashley. Olson doubled and Hall singled her in for the opening run. Aly Quintana singled home Hall for a 2-0 lead with Elon putting runners on second and third with one out.

Pirone entered in relief and stranded the two runners by forcing a pop out and a ground out. Junior third baseman Kim Smith got one run back in the bottom of the first, lofting a sacrifice fly off White to cut the deficit in half.

That would be the only scoring before Trippi's long ball and Elon's rally. Pirone, who entered the week as the Division I leader in fewest walks allowed per seven innings, did not issue a base on balls while striking out two. She threw 67 of her 88 total pitches for strikes.

Hofstra will next be in action with a Tuesday doubleheader versus Syracuse. The first game has a new start time of 2 p.m. from Bill Edwards Stadium.
